Thousands of new assets have been made available on the StarCraft II PTR. These new assets are from Warcraft III, but seem to have been updated to match the quality of StarCraft II assets.

Blizzard is also hosting a small contest involving memories of Warcraft III:
What are some of your favorite moments in Warcraft’s history? Whether it’s from the first opening of the dark portal in Warcraft: Orcs and Humans to Grommash leading the Iron Horde in Warlords of Draenor, we want to see it recreated in the StarCraft II editor. We’d love to see anything from screenshots of epic battles, single-player missions recreated from your favorite game, mini-games using the new assets or anything in-between. However you want to celebrate, we want to see it. Send us a link to your creations at

or tweet to us @BlizzardArcade.
Remember, these assets are only available on the PTR (for now). Be sure to log into the map editor on the StarCraft II PTR if you want to check out these updated Warcraft character models.

Ryan Schutter, creator of the GameHeart overlay for StarCraft II, has joined Blizzard as a StarCraft II Technical Designer. Through his work with GameHeart he has contributed a great deal to the eSports community, and is warmly welcomed as a part of Blizzard's development team.
We’re extremely happy to have Ryan onboard, and so grateful to be bringing on someone with so much passion for this game and its community. Ryan’s work in those areas is bound to continue. Moving forward, you can expect to find Ryan posting on forums, social media, and continuing his work on GameHeart and other arcade projects.

A new multiplayer development update for Legacy of the Void is out. This one is quite lengthy and covers a lot of proposed changes in detail:
Resource changes First, we’d like to give an update on the resource changes we showed at Blizzcon. In that build, resources were reduced to 70% of what they currently are in Heart of the Swarm. From our playtesting, we really liked that this set-up encouraged players to move out more and take expansions more aggressively which led to action packed games. One element we were still concerned about was the potential diminished importance of harassment since workers were being transferred much earlier. Since Blizzcon, we’ve looked at changes that keep the positive aspect of encouraging players to take more bases, while still providing incentives to harass bases in various locations. The change we are currently testing is as follows:
- Half of the mineral patches have 1500 (same as HotS), and the other half has 750.
- Gas is at 75% of total.
Worker count change We’ve heard a lot of thoughts and suggestions on different starting worker counts for Legacy of the Void, so we’ve tested alternate starting counts internally. Currently, we feel 12 is the correct number because that number feels like the point right before decisions start diverging. However, we feel that since this is a simple change from a development standpoint, we could explore alternate worker counts in the beta without any issue. Looking at our data, we believe this is the correct starting worker count, but it’s still something we are willing to test further in beta.
Lurker siege range upgrade no longer has a Hive requirement The Lurker is still working out well for us, but we felt the siege range upgrade comes in a bit too late. Seige range will still be at a very late Teir 2 tech level because it’s still gated by not only the Lurker Den, but also an upgrade on top of that. This isn’t set in stone, but we currently believe this is a better place for it.
Additional new Protoss unit We haven’t finalized design on a new Protoss unit, but it’s something we’re heavily focused on these days. We have general concepts and ideas we’re trying, but haven’t nailed down something solid yet. Generally speaking, we’re experimenting with allowing Protoss to play a more aggressive containment game in the early game by utilizing a new unit. We feel this will give some more variety to Protoss openings, since Protoss generally tends to play defensively. If you have good ideas or feedback in this area, it would be appreciated.

Blizzard has addressed some concerns about the proposed changes in Legacy of the Void's multiplayer. A lengthy post about Protoss strength, resource changes, and unit count were discussed:
Protoss Strength
We’ve seen concerns about Protoss being mostly ‘nerfed’. Obviously we don’t want any race to get mostly ‘nerfs’ while other races are buffed, but because we’re trying so many things at once, balance will be off. Also, we’re aware that if we take away from the strength of the race as a whole, we’ll need to add something else back to make up for it since the balance of the game is pretty solid right now in Heart of the Swarm.
Resource Changes
As far as resourcing is concerned, right now, we’d like to specifically target a change where players need to spread their bases out more so that there’s a lot more action going on. We believe this will have two benefits: players going on the offense will have more attacking options, and players on the defense can show off their defending skill better since they have to defend a much wider area now.
New Unit Count
Everything in the game so far is just a snapshot of where we’re at in development, and nothing is set in stone at this point. For instance, it’s absolutely not determined that Protoss will only get one unit while other races will get two. The final new unit count is not yet decided. We want to do what’s right for the races and the game, and it’s just too early to make a call on the final new unit count for Legacy of the Void right now.

Blizzard's Legacy of the Void multiplayer preview is up and it describes various changes coming in the expansion.
General Gameplay Changes
There are two changes to the general core-gameplay elements of StarCraft II. Both changes are aimed at making Legacy of the Void multiplayer a more action-packed experience.
- Resource tweaks
- In order to encourage aggression, we intend to create more places to attack. To do this, we’re incentivizing faster expansions by decreasing the resources on Mineral Fields and Vespene Geysers by 33%. Combined with our unit changes for each race, this should make mid-game aggression much more potent and viable.
- Mineral Fields now hold 1,000 Minerals instead of 1,500
- Vespene Geysers now hold 1,700 Vespene Gas instead of 2,500
- Starting worker count
- In order to generally reduce the passive time-periods in the game, we’re increasing the starting worker count from 6 workers to 12 workers. The supply granted by the Command Center, Nexus, and Hatchery are being increased to account for this.

An explanation for the upcoming Archon Mode has been posted, describing a new way to play that's very similar to Team Melee from StarCraft: Brood War. Archon Mode will allow two players to take control of a single base to defeat the opponent, who is also controlled by two players. It is set to make its debut when Legacy of the Void is released.
Archon mode allows players to enjoy the popular and highly refined 1-vs-1 multiplayer experience in a team setting. Both players share control over a single base, and battle against a single foe. As the game develops they must work together to defeat their opponents. Controlling armies, managing resources, building a base, scouting, and more have all become shared responsibilities that can be managed by either commander. The question is… how well will you divvy it all up?
There are various appeals to playing as a single-base team: it's easier to teach someone how to play, it provides an interesting dynamic of demanding co-operation, and it has the potential for a lot of entertaining chaos. For the full post on Archon Mode, click here.

A new Legacy of the Void post is up on the StarCraft II site showing various campaign features. It previews some of the missions in the campaign, ways to customize your army, and new locales.
Customization Options In Legacy of the Void, you’ll have a number of ways to customize the way you play. This includes choosing how to outfit your forces, and which systems to use on your ship.
Customizing your Army Rallying new protoss factions to your side has a benefit beyond simply growing your army. With new allies comes new technology and new ways to do battle. Finding the best ways to utilize these new forces can make all the difference on the battlefield.
New Missions and Mechanics As it was with Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm, you’ll be given a choice on which missions you’d like to undertake. As you customize your experience through your destination choices, you’ll find a slew of new missions that await.
Sky Shield Early on you’ll have a chance to display protoss values as you put yourself in harm’s way to help terran forces in need. In Sky Shield, you’ll be assisting Jim Raynor and his terran forces as they attempt to repair a falling space platform. Take on enemy forces and secure several stabilizers for the terran army to repair.

It's a big moment right now among Blizzard fans because of some sudden news. Rob Pardo, Chief Creative Officer of Blizzard Entertainment, has resigned today. After a long, nearly two-decade period, he's leaving to pursue other opportunities. The following is the full post by Rob Pardo, talking about his resignation.
Every ending is a beginning and today marks a new beginning for me.
After 17 years at Blizzard, with long and careful contemplation, I have made a difficult and bittersweet but ultimately exciting decision to pursue the next chapter in my life and career.
Before I even joined Blizzard, I was already a huge fan of the company and its games. In particular, I was extremely passionate about the emerging genre of real-time strategy games. It was a dream come true when I was given the opportunity to work on StarCraft, which at the time was being created by a very small team by today’s standards. It was tremendously fulfilling to get to know everyone on the team personally and to contribute our energies toward a shared goal in such a creative and engaging environment.
Blizzard Entertainment has been simply the best place in the world to be a game designer. The best aspect of designing games at Blizzard is that the entire company is passionate about the gameplay within each and every product. From the executive team to customer service to our global offices, every single person is a player and contributes to making the best possible games. It’s for very good reason that the first credit on every Blizzard game is “Game Design by Blizzard Entertainment.”
I’m really proud of the contributions I was able to make to Blizzard’s accomplishments. From building lasting games, to supporting the growth of eSports, to extending the Warcraft world into a feature film, and of course to being able to celebrate our shared passions with the Blizzard community online and at BlizzCon.
The Blizzard community is ultimately the reason why we come to work every day and pour our souls into every world and experience we create. Blizzard’s players are the most passionate in the world and your commitment and dedication are truly awesome to behold. Creating entertainment for you has been an incredible opportunity, and I know that you will continue to grow and become even stronger as a community over the years to come. It has been so meaningful on a personal level to help create joy for all of you.
I’m looking forward to new challenges in my career, but I will always cherish the time I spent with you all and the amazing and collaborative teams at Blizzard. It was both satisfying and humbling, and it made me a better developer and a better person. I look forward to playing Blizzard games as a player for many years to come. Most important, now I have plenty of time to learn how to build a competitive Hearthstone deck.
As to what I will be doing next, I don’t have an answer for you yet . . . but I will “when it’s ready.” My priorities are to enjoy the summer with my family, play plenty of games, and think about what’s next. The game industry is such an exciting place right now with PC gaming thriving, the new consoles, mobile games, and virtual reality becoming an actual reality. It’s like having an empty quest log and going into a new zone for the first time.
In the past, I haven’t been the most avid Twitter user, but I’ll strive to do better and keep you updated there—@Rob_Pardo. Please stay in touch!
Rob
Fond farewells. We'll miss you.

For those who have not heard of it, GameHeart is a widely popular overlay for StarCraft II that allows observers to place team and tournament logos, draw analysis on the map, zoom out much further, and more, a video of which can be seen here. Gameheart has been used in multiple tournaments for quite some time, but never in a WCS event. That is about to change with the recent announcement of a collaboration between Blizzard Entertainment and the creator of GameHeart, Ryan Schutter, that aims to create a new version of GameHeart that will serve as the official WCS tournament overlay for all of the WCS events. Furthermore, this official WCS GameHeart Overlay will be available for anyone to use on any broadcast, even ones not related to the WCS.
This collaboration, announced by Blizzard on the StarCraft II home page, seems to be fairly new, as there was no information provided about new features, functionality, or design of the new GameHeart. Details are promised to come as the project nears completion, which will most likely mark a milestone for StarCraft II eSports broadcasting.

Lately there's been a lot of talk about the recent changes to Hellbats that allows Terran players to severely pressure Zerg players and hinder their economy. A few blue posts have popped up around the Battle.net forums, written by community manager Psione.
Our intention with this change was to allow Terran to apply more pressure against Zerg in the mid-game. So far it seems to be working out well, but it's still early and we'll have to see how Zerg players adapt. We'll continue to keep an eye on how this change is affecting the TvZ match-up.
With the recent update, we've been gathering feedback on the Hellbat change and observing how it's affecting the different match-ups. From what we've seen thus far, it's helped Terran pressure Zerg in the mid-game and slow down the their economy.
While we feel this has helped the match-up overall, it's still early and we'll need to see how strategies are altered to account for increased Hellbat usage. Often when a new balance update is applied we see a period of time where players adapt to the changes by creating new strategies and eventually counter strategies. It's important that we allow time for these kind of shifts before considering if further changes are needed.
It seems like the changes will remain in place for a while longer, just to make sure that Zerg can or can't adopt new strategies in response. Here's to hoping a conclusion is reached soon.
