Thread: Age of Strife II brainstorm thread

  1. #1

Default Age of Strife II brainstorm thread

    Gameplay inspirations:

Unreal Tournament – Onslaught mode, vehicle capture the flag
DotA – upgradable items, hero skills, creep
    Team Fortress – character classes
Natural Selection – Base building and over RTS FPS type ideas

    Core Ideas:

    6v6 game

One side is completely Zerg… other side can be Terran or Protoss (user selectable)

Zerg play style – infest ancient protoss temple (enemy base)

Terran/Protoss alliance play style – destroy Zerg overmind

    Players

    5 on 5, with 2 commanders

Terran / Protoss players can choose classes. And can upgrade their specific classes in different ways.
Zerg players all start off as Zergling and have to evolve into next versions of themselves through money / experience. Or they can evolve a crazy zergling (ie, they have specific zergling options)
Terran/Protoss players will have to buy things that will make them more powerful etc.
The Commander’s job is to build things and coordinate the team but he can choose to get a class so the team won’t have a leader but has a 6v5 advantage.
What the commander does (can be taken over by AI) is pretty much play a game of Starcraft against the other commander. IE, he builds the base, builds structures, has miners, etc. And can build troops to help his team mates.
The map is more like ONS-Torlan than a Dota map. There is 3 “lanes” but instead of towers everywhere, you have nodes to capture. The map is a lot more open that DotA maps. You will definitely want to be using vehicles to travel or the various teleporting nodes to quickly move around the map.
Anyways, time to go home, brain storm away!

    Isn't it Aeon of Strife?

And I assume you're going to make the map? Good luck balancing it.

One of the most exciting games I've ever played at a LAN party right there. Such good memories...

Yeah I'm gonna try my hand at making the map. Any good ideas are welcome. Balancing will come eventually, gameplay comes first.

I am working on a similar project. Look for me in clan FA @useast and perhaps we can help each other.
Hey guys I want you all to know that my team is playing/did great this weekend so I am going to go ahead and make it my status because I know you all care and want to know my opinion on it.

This definitely sounds interesting. Here are some additional ideas:

    Heroes:
    • Different heroes can control between 2-10 infantry.
    • Heroes can be broadly classified as fighters/casters/leaders.
    • When killed, replacement heroes are deployed anywhere in the field through Warp-in and Drop Pods at a cost.
    • Replacement heroes arrive at 80% hit points and 50% energy but regenerate outside of combat.

    Commander's duties:
    • Deploy replacement heroes at his/her discretion; possibly even benching any hero who proves to be a liability.
    • Provide infantry for the heroes.
    • Manage workers and resources.
    • Via workers and transports, construct forward staging points for the heroes and maintain supply lines.
    • Via workers, control Watch Towers to keep a lookout for enemy forces; especially cloaked ones.

    Any thoughts/feedback?

Good ideas, but I don't like the idea that you're still playing a RTS kind of game if you're in hero mode. I want you to have some connection with your hero, and if you're a commander, the connection you are making is that you are a general in charge of 5 captains in the field. You can allocate resources to them as they see fit and call down air strikes as they need.

Another thing you don't want to do is overcomplicate the backend. Supply lines, transports, workers, this is far too complicated for people to grasp. DOTA is a very easy system of having 1 hero, and then killing everything in sight. I'm aiming for this kind of gameplay rather than having to set up some sort of infrastructure before your troops are good.

There are some problems with DoTA which I'd like to solve, like being able to select other characters. I find this very annoying since you sometimes misclick and then you've selected the other character rather than your own. I need to make Diablo style, so you can never unselect your character but you can view other people's health/inventory/skills etc.
