Thread: The Implementation of New Units into the Expansions

Default The Implementation of New Units into the Expansions

I know this may seem like something silly to think about but I don't think it is. My question is how do you think Blizzard will implement new units into the expansions?

Looking back at Starcraft 1, each race got two new units (well the protoss also got the dark templar), and to me it seems unlikely that they would add two new units to each of the expansions(giving the number of units for each race +4) but seeing as legacy of the void is the final product (like Brood War was with Starcraft), it makes sence that they would implement units according to how they want their end product to look. So the idea of adding one new unit for each expansion comes to mind(wich I also dont think will be done because it gives the impression of only a small change in gameplay). Another option I suppose they could do is remove certian units along the way, like units that don't see alot of gameplay use in multiplayer and then add two units to each campaign(I don't think this will happen either because it takes away what they've already worked on and implemented into the game).

My prediction for how they are going to enhance the multiplayer aspect of each of Starcraft 2's expansions is to add one new unit to each campaign but also a new building/mechanic to each campaign, either of which having a large impact on gameplay. So how do you think Blizzard will implement new stuff into the expansions multiplayer?

    Second, they will most likely:
    • add some units/upgrades/abilities
    • adjust some units/upgrades/abilities
    • remove some units/upgrades/abilities

This will essentially make the two expansions super-patches.

You really think they would remove units?

and it's kind of obvoius that they'll add some units/upgrades/abilities and adjust some units/upgrades/abilities. I'm wondering on how they are going to do it since 19 units seems like alot(if they added 2 units to each expansion)

Note: not counting Larva, Broodlings, or Nydus Worm

    SCV Terran: 11
    SCBW Terran: 13
    SC2-WoL Terran: 14
    SCV Protoss: 11
    SCBW Protoss: 14
    SC2-WoL Protoss: 15
    SCV Zerg: 11
    SCBW Zerg: 13
    SC2-WoL Zerg: 15

I think their best option is to remove at least one unit, possibly 2, from from each race right now, add it into HotS, and then create one more for each race for LotV.

My suggestions for saving until HotS
    Terran: Reaper, Banshee
    Protoss: Mothership, Immortal
    Zerg: Brood Lord, Baneling

If it came to the point of a unit being useless or not seeing much action, they probably would.

They just might do it in the upcoming beta.

well they did scraped the valk and waited for the expansion to add it.

I'm actually hoping they just add tilesets and map mechanics when it comes to multiplayer rather than new units.

I'm not a fan of removing ANY units now or in future expansions, but instead would rather see more units added. Even if it's a return of classic units from SC1. The more units the more options. Sure you run the risk of obsoleting units, but the onus is on Blizzard to maintain balance and I trust they can do so in the long run.

    I like options and variety.

I really doubt they would remove units we've already played before WoL release. However, I guess I could conceviably imagine (in my wildest dreams) the removal of certain units in an expansion. I doubt it, but if a unit has to go, it has to go! .

That being said, I think this thread brings up a really interesting question. When they started annoucing the tech trees and we started actually seeing the game my first thought was that there were way too many units and that they would completely mess up the meta-game with the two expansions if they added new units.
Now that I've seen a bit more of it, and actually had the chance to try it, I feel like they're definitely space for some more units. For example, I could definitely see an early game support unit (like a caster) added to the zerg arsenal (perhaps something somehow connected to the queen). And I could also see an addition to the protoss airforce (for example by making the phoenix a bit more beefy, and adding a very light air unit to help protect carriers and motherships). I can't really see what they would add to the Terran arsenal though, since it seems to thorough, but I trust blizzard will come up with something.
Basically, I think that if each expansion added a new unit to each race, it wouldn't be a big deal. Worst case scenario is a new scout, but a more reasonable scenario is seeing units like the current darkarchon or ghost: The type of unit that's almost never used, but when we see it we can expect some pimp plays.

I might be way too optimistic though

Really? I though the first expansion will bring forth the 4th race (errhh, Duran's rebellious minions), and the second one will provide each sides 2 new units.

Remind me of Dawn of war's expansions.
