    Default SC2 Redemption

Fan input to hypothetical SC2 remake

As shown by my previous posts on this forum, it's no secret that I'm very disappointed with SC2.
As a huge fan of the original SC/BW I had high expectations, without (IMO)being unrealistic.

That being said, I ask those people who, like me, are not happy with SC2-WoL to provide ideas to the following scenario:

Blizzard makes a statement next week "Blizzard wants a do-over! We are going to re-release SC2-WoL. Reconsider the plot, reconsider units, reconsider everything. We realise that SC2 wasn't the game our fans (or ourselves) truely wanted. It made it someway towards that goal, but we still feel there is room for improvement. Therefore, we ask YOU, the fans, for your input to make this the worthy continuation of the classic, StarCraft game and story."

I'd like ideas mainly for gameplay and story at this stage. Replays and e-sports isn't my focus for now.
    Cheers.

You mean like P.W's thread in the Lore section?

I'd personally love to get the Archaic flavor of Protoss characters. The sinister, foreboding, ominous, towering sense of things.

I don't mind switching the PoV away from Raynor's after 10 missions too.

Alright here's my idea for a plot make over.

We play from Mengsk's perspective, not Raynor's. We are in constant large scale war with the Zerg and Protoss, fighting over the artifacts while we occasionally go on preventative missions, to stop Raynor from doing anything. If it were up to me entirely I would just have Raynor killed off because frankly I think Blizzard's excuse of making him a martyr is just plain lame. But I digress, playing as Mengsk we would have plenty of believable scenarios against all other factions.

Rebels, Protoss, Kel Morians, Umojans, Raynor, Tal'Darim, Kerrigan and the Zerg.
The campaign would play extremely differently from the multiplayer in terms of resource gathering, it would be more realistic. Instead of mining minerals and sending it to the command center, everything is requisitioned and dropped down from orbital supply ships. It wouldn't change the other aspects of gaming, just the resource gathering part and production visuals.

Infantry units and such I'm fine with coming out of a barracks as it's logical to have a base of operations on any planet you land on, but otherwise for other bigger units, I'd like to see them shipped in, either by dropship for tanks and such or by drop pod for ghosts and other specialists.

We wouldn't have as many ridiculous moments where for some reason Raynor is capable of holding at bay and even defeating, an executor fleet. Whereas if we were playing as Mengsk, or Valerian or what have you, the number of forces you have at your disposable can actually make sense. Missions where we saving innocent lives and such could just be a propaganda ploy to make the general populace think that the Dominion is still an 'in your best interest' authoritarian regime, rather than a 'don't give a crap about you' regime.

Hiring mercenaries for the Dominion would also make a LOT more sense than it would for Raynor to hire them. Mercenaries do the dirty work, they do the work that you wouldn't want to have official Dominion soldiers seen doing by other people. Mercenaries work for money, not in the interest of loyalty, and who has more money around here, the Dominion, or Raynor?

I'd add more installation type missions, etc. I would make every mercenary unit have his own voice over, instead of just a slightly modified portrait.

Reusing old technology would also make a lot more sense than having Raynor suddenly acquire all of it. Let's face it, no military in the world suddenly abandons using old technology just because newer guns are out. The U.S. military still uses the M16 or M4 (whichever it was). Why wouldn't Mengsk still use Goliaths? If not for his main army, at least we would see them in certain outpost missions where you might have to hold out with nothing but old technology while new tech reinforcement arrive to lay waste to your enemies.

Kerrigan could sure as hell goad Mengsk and taunt him way more than she could Raynor, she has more of a reason to do so, and it also makes sense for Kerrigan to lose to an actual army, rather than a Rebel and a battlecruiser.

IMO everything done playing as Raynor could have been infinitely better done as Mengsk or his commanders. The game just makes the Dominion seem incompetent and portrays Raynor as a godly commander.

Under Mengsk or his son/commanders points of view, we could see a much larger and grandiose picture of the universe, with it being much darker, and way more realistic than anything WoL put out.

What's the point? We already discussed a lot since the announcement @ 2007. I think they didn't really readed anything.

He's just playing what if. I personally don't believe in hypothetical questions. It's like lying to your brain.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Interesting perspective. I never thought about doing it that way, but I think you have a valid point. Why must we play as the good guy? Being 'evil' and telling the story from that perspective - almost convincing us to sympathise with Mengsk - would have been challenging, and much more interesting.

    Here's one for ACT1:

    1. In dispair, Raynor's rebellion launches a final suicide mission against the Dominion, robbed of his natural instinct to survive and cunning leadership. In one swoop, the Raiders fall under Dominion might and Mengsk's superior tactics and strategy. This amplifies Mengsk's perception of the Rebellion as nothing but child's play, and offers Raynor a position -- for old time's sake.

    2. Raynor accepts the offer, after a few exchanges. Mengsk convinces Raynor his plight is useless and misdirected. He shows Raynor his side of the situation, his goals, and plans for the colonies. Something doesn't feel right, but Raynor concedes. He has nothing. He is broken.

    3. An announcement is made pardoning all rebel prisoners, and the elusive James Raynor is given a position in Dominion military. Mengsk makes an elaborate speech of the need for cooperation, sacrifice, and to unite as one Terran in the face of alien threats. The majority were aroused into seeing Mengsk as the hero he is, as new laws are instituted. Droves of men and women lines up for volunteer service. Matt and the crew are infuriated.
