It's true, that should work by race. Simply by having a different rank by each race solves the problem. Now that we have more than 640x480 pixels, it shouldn't be too difficult to do that (and even then, it shouldn't had been a huge impedement).

Some of the skills are transferrable between races. I worry that someone with a high protoss rank could start again with a zero zerg rank and smurf noobs.

^ Yes, and you have to remember that there will be very good players just starting out, so you'll most likely end up playing someone far superior to your own skill anyways.

I don't know, I think the way WC3 does it right now is alright. I mean, new features are great and all, but I don't know about separating rankings based on race.
