    The recent faction polls gave me an idea for a posibble game mode in sc2 ->FACTION WARS.

    Race wars would be similar to normal game mode, with one exception there would be 9 races instead of 3, 3 Terran, 3 Protoss and 3 Zerg. Each of the 3 race variation would have some special units, that other 2 variations wouldn't have, mostly units from the campaign. You pick your race, and then pick your sub race, or get it randomly, and the units you have depend on it

    This is just an example:

    Terran :

    Kel-Morian Combine : Medic , Deep Space Relay ,no Thor ,Predator, no reapers

    Umojan Protectorate : Starbase ,no mediavac, Valkyrie , no viking, Wraith

    Terran Dominion : Firebat , no Marauder, Cobra , Goliath, no Hellion


    Protoss :

    High templar caste : Strike Fighter Escorts, Star Relic, no Immortal, Soul Hunter,no Void ray

    Warrior caste: no Colossus , Reaver , no Disruptor , Dragon , no Stalker,

    Dark templar caste: Tempest ,No Carrier, ,Dark Archon, no Phoenix, Corsair

    .
    .


    It would be fun to play some old or campaign only units in skirmish, in a special mode that would allow it. What do you think ? So what do you think, are 9 races better than 3 ? And would you like to play campaign units in skirmish ?

    CnC 3's expansion and CnC Generals had that, different subfactions with their own special units and perks. I like the idea, despite not being conventional SC tourney-style play.

    Even Company of Heroes had tech trees for each faction that basically let you play a different style without becoming a radically different faction.

    I don't think units should be limited, rather current SC2 should be the base, and each faction opens up new units and upgrades for existing units. This would give players a choice of what they want without taking away options. Think of it as a WoW Talent tree, where you can gain new abilities or passive effects that defines the playstyle.

    Don't really like the idea.

    It's just a watered down version of normal multiplayer with some extra campaign units.

    It's like playing 1v1 Terran and saying player A can't use Goliaths, but player B can't use Vikings.

    The only way I see "faction wars" as an actual enjoyable mode would be to create a completely new roster of units for a faction, pretty much like making a new race.

    Considering how popular Defense of the Ancients is for Warcraft 3, I have no doubt that some user created game modes will be successful.

    DotA isn't exactly a good example to use as it has practically no relation to what the TC is suggesting.

    This could be useful for UMS, but honestly the different factions aren't balanced in lore. The Dark Templar faction would also be horribly difficult; what is their basic infantry type anyway?

    lol, their basic infantry type is clearly the the Dark Templar as we know it (the game one).

    I'd have the say the idea has merit and I'd most certainly give it a try. However, Triceron's comment pointed out its most glaring problem: Zero Hour and Kane's Wrath were hideously unbalanced.

    If you can get past the overwhelming balance issue, then you could have a viable mode. Again, I'd give it a shot. Could be fun

    Faction Wars can easily be made using UMS, so all it takes is for someone who's dedicated enough to make it.

    May I inquire as to what this UMS is? I'm not familiar with the term.
