Thread: Terran Military Question

  1. #1

    Default Terran Military Question

According to Blizzard, about 47% of Marauders had never been to jail.

Yet I am told all Marines are convicts.

In lore, is there a possibility that in the future we will be seeing more Terran military personnel that aren't from prison?

    I this a dumb question?

No, but it belongs in the lore forum.

Absolutely. With aliens all around and Mengsk being who he is (charismatic rhetoric-lovin' orator), chances are citizens have been signing up in droves all over the place to "stand tall and proud" and "safeguard their right to live" while "protecting your communities."

Not sure how I feel about that, honestly. I really like the lore behind the re-soc thing, and I just... keep waiting for it to show up in a bag way in the game. I mean, just imagine, let's say half of the Dominion Marines are still resocced. What if Valerian suddenly has a different agenda from Warfield down on the ground, and the Marines take him out? What if in the Showdown cinematic it was Mengsk's Dominion Marines that tried to take Kerrigan for Mengsk, not Tychus?

Just so much fun to be had with an idea like that.

Before the Great War, most marines were convicts. However, by the time the war actually started, only about half were convicts.

By the Second Great War, less than half of marines had been convicts. I would guess the same thing for marauders.

It applies specifically to marauders though.

Regardless, marines in Raynor's crew are not resocced - otherwise they would frag Raynor. They may or may not be convicts though. :P

    From Zero Hour:

Horner: I hate to ask, sir -- but is there a reason that convict's still on my bridge?
Raynor: Easy, Matt. Tychus is one of my oldest friends. He helped me out of a real bind a few years back. I owe him.
Horner: Well your friend has a criminal record as long as ...
    Raynor: Mine?

Now, it could be that Matt simply has a problem with convicts being on his bridge (and doesn't mind them anywhere else)... but Raynor's reply is what stands out to me. Pointing out that Raynor also has a criminal record wouldn't really work as an argument unless it was guaranteed to catch Matt off-guard, which means this situation doesn't come up often enough for Matt to think about it. Which means convicts don't often parade around the Hyperion's bridge.

Now, that leaves us with one of two options. Either there are few to no convicts serving aboard the Hyperion (surprising, given Raynor's inability to cherrypick his staff), or Matt simply has no dealings whatsoever with the part of their crew that actually gets the jobs done (Marines, Pilots, etc.) which is also kind of surprising, but given the fact that I never saw a single Marine aboard the Hyperion that wasn't Tychus, maybe plausible.

Or, y'know, Option C which is that Blizz didn't really expect people to use that one conversation to figure out whether Raynor has convicts serving in his outfit, and if so what ratio of his outfit they make up...

You'd assume being part of Raynor's crew would be criminal offence on its own right, so I guess the only reason they aren't convicts is because they haven't been officially tried :P.

Horner considers Findlay to be a real criminal, not a political criminal.

Note that Horner doesn't like Tosh either (for probably the same reason).
