How can one empathize with an emotion that comes out without any logical basis? A random emotion is insanity in the works, but authors who can root their audience in emotion driven stories must still propose a solid basis from which those emotions emerge.
Anyway, I thought that in that sequence Karass was actually more of a threat than Zeratul was. Karass was with a contingent of protoss harassing Kerrigan's forces.
She could have left due that, and thought she had no time to deal with Zeratul (as it will take some time to actually be rid of him) and actually just leave him angry at her or let him go. Zeratul wants to strike kerrigan regardless to redeem himself or avenge the Matriarch, while Kerrigan taunts him by implying to forget it, and that it really doesn't matter.
It's a mixed scene of everything, imo.
