Yea true...Protoss in SC/BW were more like proud alien techie warriors - in WOL they became elves-wannabes.

Basically, I think we all can agree the human interactions are mostly excellent, it's the mythological stuff that's subpar.

Human interactions, huh? Easy for you to say...Israeli girls provide some of the best human interaction available here on Earth (not sure if any of them got to be in the K-Sector :P).

    Wait, what?

Anyway, i think it kinda got jumbled up somewhere. All WoL needed was a bit of more exposition, and a lot less over stretching.

    2. He wrote the story and dialogue for the RTS game Sacrifise which had gotten amazing reviews for it - story/humor/character was specifically praised: http://pc.ign.com/articles/164/164060p1.html

Although we obviously don't know what exactly happened when he dealt with SC along with Metzen (there are many unknown facts and I may be wrong), but judging from the WOL plot, I think it's safe to make the bald assumption that "a guy named Phinney" was the primary writing force behind the SC and BW scripts.

He must have had some aspiration to join ArenaNet or there was a break between him and Metzen, (that would be better answered in an interview) but if what I'm assuming is accurate, it's a shame he's not working on SC2
I was thinking the exact same thing. I think Metzen was in charge of the lore stuff and the general direction of the SC universe, whilst Phinney was the one who developed the characters who are just as memorable today as they were 12 years ago.

I'm glad you brought up that Sacrifice game. It's a prime example of how good Phinney's writing is because although the concept of the game was very weird and wonderful, the main character had strong sense of pathos. One of the best games that no-one ever played.

That video shows some interesting dialogue and premise, GnaReffotsirk. Thanks.

Anyhow, I hope Gradius and/or other editors do find the time and consider reaching out to Mr. Phinney to interview him. Perhaps we may learn something new from the real author of the script that we had not known before, or it'll just be interesting anyhow.

Thanks, Turalyon - I'll be checking out the game very soon indeed!

Yea, I think it was one of those falling outs when a creator of something leaves, a partner who didn't quite create it takes over and a sequel is a mess.

No probs. The gameplay can be frustratingly difficult at times though...

You won't regret it storywise - it's got an ingenious way of telling it's story (it's like a story within a story) and a lot of depth in just 10 missions (replayable due to different choices and consequences!).

Blizzard should have looked to this game on how to make mission choice meaningful and a story that is coherent and tightly focused on its protagonist.

It's a real shame this game never got any attention. Shiny Entertainment - well known for it's innovative ideas and experimentation - pretty much died after the 'failure' of this game. It's truly sad that it's failure had a flow-thru effect where any game developer is now too scared to try anything too radical or meaningful

Blunder on my part: As opposed to Starcraft, James Phinney was not involved in Brood War in any major way according to the credits where he simply gets a "special thanks" http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...od-war/credits, whereas in Strcraft he was a Lead Designer and Producer - http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/James_Phinney

This may explain some inconsistencies with the campaigns, as noted by FanaticTemplar in his Brood War Analysis
    - So, Gerard, I suspect you have a good reason for pulling me away from my Duties.
    - Your Vodka can wait, my good Alexi.
