I honestly would like to see a range extension to phoenixes, that said I wish my Vikings would fly faster

Muta's are cheaper, but they're kited for breakfast by micro'd Phoenixes. Anywho, 10 phoenixes with fully charged GB's can walk into an undefended mineral line and annihilate it in a few seconds.

They have both the range, speed, damage and the health advantage over mutalisk. The only thing they don't have is the mass production. And truthfully, even if they didn't have the damage and health advantage, speed and a slight range advantage is plenty. Its the same reason why 5rax reaper became so dang annoying for a zerg to fight against. Reapers were faster and had slightly longer range then any zerg unit shy of t2. They would just bounce back and forth, doing damage and retreating and were able to even pick off roaches if the roaches weren't microed with gosu precision.

Having a slight range advantage is just fine and dandy, especially considering you get all those other advantages for 50 more minerals. The things are bloody cheap considering how versatile they are.

It solely depends on what type of AA they get to counter the Phoenix. You need to get 3-4 base defense to stop Phoenix, because unlike muta they don't HAVE to be breathing on their targets to attack. Marines are okay, but they need to stim to get anywhere in time and even then the Phoenix is faster. You can really drain lots of energy off medivacs by Phoenix harassing if he commits to marines. (Not to mention the fact that having a squadron or two of Phoenixes patrolling the map really makes a terran re-think dropping) Stalkers and Hydras are better, but are still too slow to properly counter the harassment, unless you fly directly over his army. Vikings and Voids are terribad against Phoenix unless you outnumber them. Capitol Ships are too slow and costly to prevent anything. The only true counters to Phoenix harassment are Infesters and Corrupters. Corrupters are a total waste, because they have no utility against you outside of killing Phoenix. Infesters are the only things that make me cringe if I try to Phoenix harass. Everything else can be dodged or outright avoided thanks to the 4.1 movement speed.

Build a few static defenses on the mineral line, the Phoenix can't do anything against them.

I don't think that VRs and Vikings are that bad vs the Phoenix, considering that they're much more versatile. Charged VRs aren't bad at all vs the Phoenix.

Vikings can fly over a base, land, and destroy much more workers than a group of Phoenix could. No need to say that it requires less micro, and the force needed to counter them would need to be larger.

The range difference with the Mutalisk is only one matrix. Any static defenses that will hit a Muta will hit a Phoenix, unless placement is crap.

not to mention phoenixes can only harrass when they have energy. For vikings it isn't a problem, pretty sure viking dps is high up there with almost hydralisk
