Okay, in that we have sharks (electrosensing), dolphins/whales (echolocation), octopuses (shapeshifting), bats (echolocation again), pit vipers (heat sensing, fang/poison control), wolves (olfactory perception) cone-shells (advanced neurotoxin).
Other animals may provide ideas for the swarm to develop, but will not necessarily 'contribute' any actual DNA.

They would most likely consume the apex predators.
Boa constrictor
Brown Bear
Komodo dragon
Lion
Golden Eagle
American Crocodile
Great White Shark
In my honest opinion, if the Zerg mutated from those they would create some fucking epic units.

Apex predators are unlikely, most of them tend to rely on speed or power to take their kills down, and those are attributes which the Zerg likely possess in greater degrees than any natural predator. What the Zerg would likely aim for are creatures with special senses or abilities, echolocation, neurotoxins, etc, which they may not have thought of or developed, but which may nevertheless prove to be useful.

Pictured here. The Zerg would infest the most disgusting, scariest form of life.
Some of the creepiest and most dangerous creatures the Zerg can assimilate.
Cordyceps Fungus - Creepy mind-controllung fungi!
Golden Poison Frog - And I thought religion was poisionous...
Turritopsis nutricula - "Heeeere we are, born to be kings. We are the princes of the uuuuniverse..."
Necrotizing fasciitis - This is always a fun one.
Saxitoxin - Bacteria produced by some species of jellyfish, this toxin has been classified as a weapon of mass destruction.
Aaand sold.
Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Those Turritopsis Nutricula are unlikely candidates for assimilation, there's no point in being able to live forever when your average lifespan is a handful of years in any case. The rest of them are interesting, though Necrotizing Fasciitis and Saxitoxin couldn't actually be infested (what this thread is about), though they may see use in some of the strains.

The books really show just how infectious and dangerous the creep really is to anything non-Zerg. Imagine if the Zerg were able to use the old spore colonies to release creep spores into the air, killing or infesting any living creature within range. Creep you can run away from, the Zerg warriors, not as likely, but how could the average person defend against something in the air that'll kill/infest you?

Zerg should have came to Earth in the Mesozaic era. Infested dinosaurs would give Ultralisks a run for their money. Infested velociraptors anyone?![]()

Earth's natural predators would rape the Zerg (JK).
