I played WoW since it came out and I'm very much looking forward to buying Starcraft II the day it comes out.

6 million of those people are from China and are currently locked out from playing.
I think a lot of people will switch over. Many of the longtime players of wow are Blizzard gamers... they have played in wow, wc3, sc/bw, d2, d1, etc. I know my guild/clan already has 57 members signed up for SC2 and that should grow to well over 150 as we get closer to release. We made our name in the original SC (though the clan started in Diablo, 1996) and we want to build on our RTS success. We will not shut down our WOW guild, but it will certainly take a hit.

Whoa, damn! Can you tell me the winning Lottery numbers for July 17th too? I'd really like to know.
There will be people who won't play the game because it's not their thing. That's obvious. It doesn't mean these same people will make hissy fits because it's not their kind of game. It doesn't even make logical sense. The person would have to have a very closed mind or a predetermined expectation of the game to hate it because it's not WoW. These types of people won't matter because they aren't the target demographic. You're not going to get the grandma playing WoW with her grandson to suddenly embrace SC2.
Keep in mind though, most people who buy SC2 will be buying it for the singleplayer. The Singleplayer will be incredibly accessable to gamers, and I'm sure it will be an enjoyable experience. Multiplayer is surprisingly a small demographic of consumers compared to singleplayer; it's a reason why console games sell so well. Yes, I know there is XBL and Playstation network etc, but even the number of gamers online is shadowed by the number of gamers offline. You simply don't hear about the singleplayer demographic because they're not an active part of the online community.
SC2's map editor is powerful as well, and it has the potential of creating any gaming experience. Even the typical WoW player could be interested in a Tower Defense map or maybe a Simcity style map. WoW isn't all about stats and gear, a lot of the fun is in its sandbox choice-based gameplay. I'm fairly confident that SC2 will offer many of these kind of hooks outside of Multiplayer.

Has anyone ever heard of the game Dark Invasion II on WC3?
I'm currently playing with a friend, and it is THE most amazing RPG I have ever witnessed on WC3.
I'm sure WoW players will have no problem finding custom games that will inevitably draw them in.
I never thought I'd like WC3 custom games, but I was wrong.

Actually, I think it was Dustin or Chris but one of them said that it was half multiplayer players and half singleplayer players. I don't know how they made their stats but probably something along the line of "number of buyers - number of CD keys used online". This should be accurate enough even though it doesn't count "pirate" users.

...right.
And here I thought they just like vibrant colours and rich textures. It must just be to make them cartoon-esque to appeal to the WoW crowd...
Eh. I think there's a lot of WoW players who'll shift over to SC2. I know a few. And they have friends, who will want to at least try out this new game I think.
Probably won't get all 9 million over day 1, but over time, maybe a few people will want to try it out from WoW.

you don't have to be hardcore to play sc2. I thought alot of people around here were interested in the storyline for example. They won't have to play online to enjoy the game, and the sale is all the statistic blizzard is using.
Online play doesn't have to be hardcore either. anyone who has played sc or war3 knows about UMS maps, and those alone are very entertaining, and some are quite long and deep. it'll happen. many people enjoy team games over 1v1 games too, because it generally doesn't put as much pressure on the player. Going where friends go, and friends will go.
