Thread: Immortals vs Splash Damage

    Default Immortals vs Splash Damage

I don't play competitively much, so I apologize so being uninformed. I'm wonder if splash damage is a great problem for Immortals. Of course their shields reduce the damage to ten, but splash damage will several of them and thus damage several of them. For example, the Siege Tank, it attacks a closely packed trio of Immortals. Only does 10 damage to the base Immortal but also does damage to the units near it (I don't know the exact ratio of damage siege tank splash does).

In theory, IMO, this means that while splash units may not do as much damage to a lone Immortal, perhaps they'll do just as much damage as normal to the group collectively. The one challenge mission highlights this - when its Immortals vs Siege Tanks you still take a lot of damage since the Tanks are still depleting your shields fairly quickly due to splashing off their targets. I would imagine perhaps Archons and Colossi would have this sort of effect as well.

So, that brings me back to the topic title - are units that do splash damage effective against Immortals on this principal, or no? Against a group of Immortals does splash damage significantly lessen the advantage of their hardened shields?

I should think splash always lessens an advantage. It takes 15 Seiged Tanks to 1 shot an Immortal. Splash means you can kill 3 clumped Immortals in 15 shots instead of 45.

this seems like an odd question... ur asking if splash damage is effective against immortals? wat i dont see the connection is, wat makes splash different for immortals than any other units, clumped immortals are gonna take more damage even if they have harden shields, so obviously splash is good, i dont think there is any point in time where having splash damage isnt going to be more effective.

That Immortals take less damage. I'm asking if the splash damage acts to sort of neutralize the Hardened Shields by spreading damage out over a group of Immortals. I'm asking how much of an impact this has.

It has more impact the more Immortals it can hit. Doing 20 damage, 10 damage each, in one shot by splashing them is better than only doing 10 damage to one Immortal without splash. It doesn't neutralize the hardened shields obviously, but it certainly makes the entire group of Immortals more susceptible to other forms of damage.

Actually, the way Blizzard has made splash in sc2 is from a center point outwards in a circle with constantly decreasing damage from the center point of impact. So, the larger the unit, the lesser the effect of splash.

Hence, when you have a Thor being fired upon by tanks, the surrounding units don't take much splash since the Thor is very large. For Immortals, I have found that the splash from tanks work similarly, although Immortals are smaller than Thors. The amount of splash transferred to units around the Immortal is still not that much. It is more than the Thor situation, but Protoss units have more HP and shields, so the splash damages them to a lesser extent than a Terran army.
