The most useless and superfluous character in the campaign...
But then, had there been a single character with a story arc that had been meaningful to the events of the campaign or shaped them in any way? Apart from Raynor?
The more I think about it, the more I wonder where they expected the player's interest to lie as concerns the story...

Never liked him as a character, just your typical little geek in the corner messing with things he shouldn't be playing with. Either way, I doubt he could access Zeratul's crystal...I would assume that the Dark Templar have ways of limiting the access of such devices to those they wish to take a look into such. Other Protoss may know how to get around this...but I'm guessing it was "locked" to anyone else without knowledge of how to bypass such.
...Kerrigan might have been able to though...all the more reason to have Hanson on that ship, as a potential thrall.

I found him a very lacking character, he barely ever speaks and seems to lack personality.

But to be fair, that had more to do with how the campaign's mechanics were implemented and Blizzard's decisions rather than the character/voice actor himself. A lot of the lines that would have made more sense coming from Stetmann wound up being given by Hanson. And when she leaves, he was still not given the opportunity to step up.

They could have given his character a lot more depth by having an accessible consol in the lab play "Stetmann's logs" which would be brief little segments of him talking into a camera and documenting his findings...rather than the textual note fragments we get each time the Zerg, or Crystal, specimen grows. I think seeing, and hearing, his reports in such a manner (which would have made perfect sense too) may have added the depth his character needed to be anything but a filler.
They could have done a LOT to enhance on their overall concept... Even the world descriptions fell a little flat, I was expecting a vivid detailed run down of flora and fauna with a brief history and interesting factoids about the planet. I was also expecting the ability to visit starports, or pirate outposts, various things that would have enhanced greatly upon that whole RP element in the game. It would have been awesome to be able to visit fringe outposts where mercs and pirates gather, Jim running into old enemies and allies...communicating with the locals...etc.
Basically, a lot more optional things that didn't so much focus on the missions as they did lore in general...additional tid bits to explore, the ability to roam the galaxy.

Meh,
In Starcraft lore, many of your scientists practice in several fields...some of them even have a medical background atop it. It doesn't make as much sense as a full fledged team, but...with data records and mechanical, neural, implants...who knows. Being a scientist may mean little more than having a neural implant that grants you a wireless link to a mass Internet-like reservoir of information based upon several fields.
Even more amusing...I have a friend in real life going to collage for all that happy shit, and her professors pet project is extracting memories out of the brains of people so that they can be implanted into those of others. For example, if you wanted to be a doctor...get the memories of one implanted into your think meat...and you're suddenly a doctor. Strange shit...the girl spends most of her collage days creating cancer material hah.

Lets put it this way - who would you want performing surgery on you, a Surgeon or a Quantum Physicist who has done some dissection on pigs? It just doesn't make sense that a scientist as young as Stetmann can be doing all these different things, implants or not.
Also, with the 'Matrix' learning theory, why wouldn't everyone be a super genius scientist dude?

Well, my neural matrix concept wasn't really an attempt to explain the likely case, but more so an example of a vague possibility to validate that it could be practically anything when it comes down to the explanation.
Most likely, Stetmann is the only individual of his nature that they could get...being labeled as Terrorists. Not only that, but Statemann being a "jack of all trades" scientist is, most likely, far more suited for their operations than a single fielded specialist. Where the latter could do one thing exceedingly well, Stetmann can do a bit of everything...with room to grow in knowledge regarding either of these fields through experimentation and simply knowing the basics.
They might not think of it this way themselves, but the way I see it, a jack of all trades ensures that they at least have moderate resources from all these fields onboard...rather than completely lacking them in exchange for one specified person. Either way...beggars can't be choosers, they're low on funds and labeled Terrorists by the Terran Dominion, he's prolly all they could get.
