Starcraft was made for these 3 races to collide, if you got the secret mission you hear that matt horner tells jim no to shoot it because its indestructable, also i cant remember the mission name where you survive till you die when you're protoss you hear zerutal say "the humans have been consumed" meaning they have no threat to the xel'naga. Also you saw them and also saw if th how strong they were, Zerg would need to have brains so they dont turn into slaves, Terran would have to turn into some kind of protoss/human hybrid to stand a chance :P

If one recognizes that SC and rock-paper-scissors operate under entirely different principles, why does the idea of "hammer breaks the game" still hold any merit?

Right now the Protoss are balanced to fight against both the Terrans and the Zerg. There is no (compelling) reason I've come across they could not also be balanced to fight against the XYZs at the same time.

WC3 is a terrible game to use for the purposes of balance discussion. Its hero-centric approach (where, often enough, the hero you pick will sway the game more than the units you use) completely warped any chance that game had of being balanced. Especially when they brought in items.... (especially when many of those items were Randomly dropped....)

If you take the Undead out of the game and patch the NE/Humans/Orcs to play only each other, the game isn't suddenly going to become balanced. Because the 4th race isn't the issue.

I think heroes are the biggest problem with WC3. I don't think I've ever seen anyone pick anything other than the Blademaster as their first hero.

Hmm...I typically go Far Seer > Witch Doctor > Blademaster

The Tauren Hero has to be the most useless friggin unit ever created - "So, yer ultimate ability is to come back to life in the same place you were killed?"

    .....but I digress.
    "Wait.....no Gzhee-Gzhee.....?.....whu......Why no Ghzhee-Gzhee?!?!?!?!"

Which gets really weird if your opponent isn't even playing Orc to begin with!

Get rid of protoss and zerg, lore-wise combine them to be the xel'naga, introduce new evil race, namely a twisted hybrid race (not remotely close to perfection like the xel'naga) lead by evil voice dude.

    that's SC3
or keep races as is, and introduce XN as race 4
