I was shocked when they took even missions out of Firefly

You mean that one mission, where the only similarity was the goal of transmitting a message? And the mission goal made perfect sense in the overall context of the WoL story?

Seriously, you need to re-evaluate what you consider "taken from".

Not quite. They're still lacking whores... erm, I mean companions.

The similarities are there, but I believe that begin and end with southern-talking backwater yokels in space running against the law. And psychics. And the whole twanging guitar in the background.

It's only when that guitar twangs that I think Firefly, honestly. Firefly was much better written. Awesome scripting, too.
    Aaand sold.

A lot of those similarities are similarities shared across Space Westerns in general where the emphasis is more on 'western'.

Actually, the train robbery was very similar as well... However, train robberies are common in Westerns, period. And Firefly was most likely regurgitating that scenario with their sci-fi take on it, which makes it seem somewhat similar but overall is just a typical Western thing.

And there is a very straightforward allusion... There's a cheat called "Jaynestown," which gives you a resource grant, clearly based off the episode Jaynestown in which Jayne is the undeserving hero of a city in which he dropped money upon to lighten the weight of his get-away ship.

yep yep yep. Blizzard copied firefly, i believe partly out of love, partly because firefly was more genius than them and they knew it, however, they went too far imo

As you pointed out, train robberies are common in westerns. Moreover, there is a marked difference about the methods used and the merchandise being lifted. In Firefly, the gang posed as passengers before lifting the merchandise out without revealing their identities to the guards. In SC2, Raynor's crew blew up the trains in order to recover the merchandise from the wreckage.

As for the cheats, it's a reference to a fellow sci-fi series. There are cheats referring to other franchises as well (e.g. BSG has 'sosayweall'). Yet, Blizzard doesn't get nearly as much flack for that homage.

Firefly is a space western. Starcraft is a space western (regarding Terrans). There's bound to be similarities and homages. Gone too far? Ridiculous. They both draw from the same source, which is the old west. Most of the similarities between the two can be taken straight out of cowboy flicks and spaghetti westerns.
