I looked through the editor and decided to take a better picture of the Dark Voice. Certainly confirms it has possessed a Protoss.

i'd hate to see that kind of twist in the story...

I think it might be a rogue Xel'Naga left behind by the others. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the Ancients from the Stargate universe. At some point, it is mentioned, that the Xel'Naga have left this world and the wording is mildly suggestive of them ascending to another plane of existence. Additionally, the Dark Voice has been called The Fallen One, which does remind me of the Ori.

It could be, that the Fallen One tampered with the Zerg after their original creation and might have even been responsible for the Overmind's revolt against the Xel'Naga. The Dark Voice's claim, that it was he/she/it that originally created the Zerg and the Protoss, need not be strictly true.

Of course, I'm only speculating here.
