I think the game kicked total ass and the storyline was good but rode on the original (obviously) and couldn't stand on it's own.
Biggest problem with the game: The story took on WAYYYYY more than it could, it was too wide in scope and lost focus. I know this game takes on a lot of Firefly influences, even having a cheatcode based on the show...remember the movie Serenity? It was just okay, right, because the plot was gigantic while the movie was only an hour and a half, so the characters were overwhelmed and ignored .
Serenity had to tie in a BUNCH of stuff in a small amount of time from the much longer Firefly. Starcraft 2 is very similarly large unfocused plot (while the protoss campaign was nice those missions should have concentrated on Raynor and just added too much confusion and unanswered questions, why couldn't they leave these for later and solidify the plot? They didn't exactly add anything to Raynor's plot. These things could have been introduced slowly in a streamlined process. What happened to good storytelling that slowly unravels things? The game started off like this and towards the center the gradually progressing plot just opened up into confusion)
The Starcraft universe was dead and they needed to pull everything into Starcraft 2 so the old lore can continue into the next games. This was a huge task and when pulling all this info in such a disorganized way it diluted the plot.
Another mistake: Tosh and Hanson. Yes they were great storylines, but again they're not even straight cannon lore as they were "decision" missions. AND they ignore the real storyline hardcore fans like LOA have been living for the past 10 years
Suggestion: Smaller cast. All this emptiness shocked me when Char popped up, I was like wow, the game is over already?
