It's pretty much what I thought it was going to be.

The missions are standard fare for an RTS. Collect this, defend that, defend here, attack this, etc etc. Most of the time the mission revolves around massing a huge amount of units then just a-moving where ever the McGuffin is. Upgrades are cool and all, but as long as you use your credits, you'll be fine. So far, I haven't really been challenged, even on Brutal. If you know how to do a proper SimCity, most attacks are worthless against you.

The story is okay. I wish there was an option for subtitles because there is no way to understand Tosh during a mission and Finley is sometimes difficult to understand with background noises going off. Other than that, it's full of cliches, stereotypes and the plot never really pulls any surprises. I'm about 8 missions in, so this may change later on.

Overall, I'd give it a 4 out of 10 for the singleplayer, but I generally don't like RTS singleplayer games.

Guess they took away the star map.

    A question for all the people that voted Dissapointed;

I'm just wondering what were you actualy expecting from the campaign?

And which other rts game campaign would you call good, or to which you were comparing WOL ones to?

Oh my god, this is exactly what I wanted to write.

The SP kicks the crap out of every other RTS on the market (and I have played a lot).

    The missions?
Breathtaking. Every mission has its own distinct features. You can sum up every single mission with a few words, and everyone knows which mission you mean. "the one with the fire wall, bro!"

    The storytelling / immersion?
Awesome. A bazillion of cut scenes which look absolutely gorgeous (try upgrading your PC, the machine you played SC1 on in 1998 won't do, obviously), interactive stuff on the Hyperion, research, decisions to make which affect the outcome.

    Story itself?
A bit cheesy, I have to admit.

    The gameplay?
Smooth, polished, fast, and challenging if you want to do all the achievements.

    Multiplayer?
Bring on chat channels and clan support, and I'm in .

I think this game has only one major problem:
People don't have realistic expectations, they don't compare SC2 to other games / RTS (again, I have played a lot, and SC2 is the best imho!), but to what they think SC2 should be, and have tremendously overhyped expectations in this regard.

Oh and I looked this up... it's bad when the most lame protoss (aldaris) in sc1 still sounds cooler and has a better voice than ANY protoss in sc2. 10 years and we get this for our sequel?
Before I say anything I'll start by mentioning that I voted 'blown away' for the campaign. Haven't finished it yet, but the level of stuff you can do, the character interaction, research, level selection... pretty amazing stuff.

    However...

I agree that art wise the game has lost something. The overall look and feel of the SC1 was dark, brooding sci-fi mixed with a slightly more upbeat humor for the Terrans. There was a real mood to it, the music on the mission briefings, the way they introduce the levels with the display pictures of the various locations. The way the characters interacted with each other made it feel like you were in another place. It was quite serious, gothic even.

That being said, the reason I gave it such a high score is because the Terrans were the ones who had most of the humour in the original. The real test for the new art direction will come imo with the Protoss campaign.

The Protoss have changed for the worse artistically, they seem to have lost their serious edge with the mothership and become too flamboyant. Listening to Tasadar, Zeratul, Aldaris and Fenix talk in the old SC was totally unique in any sci fi game I've played, there was this tremendous presence to them that I felt was lost on the Protoss in SC2.

The game is still amazing, I do wish however that they'd darken things up otherwise I don't think they're ever going to top the intro cutscene to Broodwar, which still remains in my mind the greatest ever SC fmv.

Okay so I was playing around with the units just clicking my fire bat and then he says the greatest quote ever. "Just burninating the country side."

Hahaha. Oh man blizzard you have no shame. :P That made this game for me. hahaha

I have to go with an option between "Blown Away" and "Content"

I have also played a lot of stratergy game, CNC amoung them, and have to say that the game is far more than most others. Are there flaws, certainly. I weep for the loss of the Protoss of old, the powerful race that once was.

But I have to say, its a good game so far. Am I gulping it down like others? Hell no, I am sampling it slowly like a fine wine.

There are no good SP RTS games as far as I'm concerned and I've played about 6-8 RTS games over the past decade. They are all just variations of each other, like I said, defend this, defend that, steal this, attack here, etc etc. So far, I've never had to rethink my strategy at all. Just mass the unit of the mission + MMM and a-move.

Single player has indeed always been some thing like this. Which is why I was hoping the story would be as good as sc1. When playing sc1 I always wanted to play the next mission to find out what happens next in the story. In sc2 I play the next mission hoping to see if the story gets any better. If I wanted nothing but awesome gameplay, I'd play on b.net.

Also, another thing that really pissed me off is that in the behind the scenes dvd someone said "we based the story around the mechanic in the mission and if it didn't work we would change the story." What has happened to you blizzard?!
