It's also for security. If everything goes through their servers they can keep it under tabs instead of allowing that code out into the public domain.

I'm speechless.
I happen to not have a broadband connection due to my location, and because of the economy (which is now 2 trillion dollars+ in debt) there are no plans to expand broadband into my area for the foreseeable future (they were talking 2015). Satellite does not work for internet gaming, and T1 in my area has an outrageous installation fee.
One of the greatest things about Blizzard games is that you can guarantee that they'll play on a LAN. My siblings and I to this day will play a six player match-up of StarCraft on the LAN. This would not be possible with our current connection (routing through Blizzard's servers, and back to our home for six connections on a 144k?).
When companies have a game that can feature LAN play, and then rip it out in favor of being able to monitor and control its gaming population, I avoid those games. I can't help but think of what would have become of Hell Gate: London if they had allows local connections instead of forcing players through their on-line service. At the very least, it would have been a cult LAN favorite.
I will still obviously be paying for the game, but I will seek out a cracked version of the client so that I can play LAN. Seeing as how I won't be able to use Blizzard's Battle.net service, I'm sure they won't mind.
Irritating. Disheartening.

listen... Lan as always been a way for people to play multiplayer w/o forcing everyone to own a copy. There is nothing wrong with this. When you're playing 2 players at super mario are you pirating? No... Other reasons would be: A friend of yours come over and you wanna play together. You both got a copy but there's not enough places on the router to plug your friend on.
In any cases, hackers will find a way because they can and always do.

Wow this is disturbing news. When I was in the military and I was stationed on a ship we couldn't play Starcraft on b.net so we played on LAN. I guess we'll never see SC2 played on the ships.
Also I attend a lot of LAN parties which DON"T have internet access.

Agreed.
The point is that buying the game isn't suppose to enable you and your friends to play the game, just you. By doing this, they're making sure the CD-Keys are more strictly enforced.
While people who want to crack the game will continue to do so, blizzard has every right to protect their own legal properties. This is just another level of security to protect their game.
I'm so bad at SC, but I love it so much!

You're also playing on the same machine with the same game disc. When you're playing 2 players at super mario are you pirating? No...
Not quite the same thing as over LAN, is it?
Yeah, that would have kept them in businessAt the very least, it would have been a cult LAN favorite.
I feel your pain. There's this great multiplayer game coming out there that you just can't play in multiplayer because you live in a place with no broadband. It sucks.
But ultimately, you're in a situation few people are in. Certainly put forth your case. But I don't think you have the numbers to really make your voice heard.
Hey, an even-more-legit-point. The "When I was in the military" stories always tend to pull the heartstrings, so that might actually have some traction with Blizzard. When I was in the military and I was stationed on a ship we couldn't play Starcraft on b.net so we played on LAN.
