Well as a
trailer indeed, I still disliked the mix of both technologies very much.
And I never said they needed hours of pre-redered. Quite the opposite actually, I said their videos didn't have to be as long as this one, they could be MUCH shorter, but of better quality.
Telling the story in in-engine cutscenes is perfectly fine, I'm not really complaining about the quality of those.
What I've been saying from the strat is that the MIX of both technologies looked terrible.
@Pure.Wasted: You make some good points. You're right, when I saw some pre-rendered off the bat I was expecting something beautiful, not some "storytelling" (or a peek at what seems to be a pretty predictable story...). I guess it's all about expectations. When I saw that gun go in the holster, or that marine shoulder the other into a wall, that completely ruined the video for me.
Regarding "too much like a movie" complaint, NO! Seriously, what was up with the short flashing scenes at the end? The cut scene where that chick goes to kiss Raynor? Those dumb pauses before "to get the job done" and "some things are worth fighting for"? The cheesy underwhelming music? That had zero build up, even for a hardcore BW, and Blizzard fan like me.
Excuse me if I was expecting more from this than a ripoff from every single dumb hollywood action movie that exists... Sadly, that's what sells. But that's NOT quality. That's also why I was complaining about the off-voice, it was so... 'block-buster for the masses'. Another voice I hated was the overly-caricatural Mengsk voice (the son). Though the voices aren't the problem to me.
Hollywood blockbusters aren't always bad of course! Silly plotlines can become great movies, average acting can still draw you in, low budgets can lead to an epiphany, but that requires some awesome directing and coherence in the movie.
This was neither a high-quality video game teaser (watch Diablo and Diablo2 teasers) nor an adequate teaser to present a cinematic or story-telling telling experience. It was somewhere in the middle, and by not commiting I think this video fell short.
This is just my opinion though.
And again, you're right that the other voices are fine, and I did think for a second this might be an intro sequence. I just think this was a bit sloppy all-together (as was my post btw

).
