Erm, until there are more controls to prevent these bigots, etc etc from becoming the prevalent force and choking everything that is good on the internet, I think this is the right path. Change for the sake of change is never good, SinsWage.

Thing is, I think that they don't like the idea that developpers' and CMs' ingame usernames will be visible to the public, sincewe can add them as friends ingame that way...It will seem like Blizzard will have favoritism towards certain players rather than looking at the community as a whole.
I hope they make Real ID on the forums optional for ppl who want to use it...I would use it but I was always worried about the ramifications for everyone else and how it would be invasive to many. I have nothing against such privacy and am glad to see that it's not mandatory.

The main problem is that Blizzard does not want it's fans/player to get into harms way, look at counter strike stories and whatnot. Blizzard's always been anal about protecting it's people

Hm. I wonder why you couldn't simply "opt-in" to showing your real name, and have a button in the forums to show "Only Real ID's" or "Show All". This way the riff-raff can simply be mass ignored by those who are desiring a more 'sophisticated' community.
The question is: Would there be a big enough community from the Real ID folks alone? Or oppositely from the Anonymous? It'd be an interesting experiment.
If there was such an option, would you "opt-in"?

Impressive, I didn't think they'd buckle under the community pressure but they did.
I didn't mind the whole real-ID feature but I guess the hardcore blizzard forum posters can breathe easy again.

Haha. I don't think he really cares one way or another about this. It wasn't bring him any money either way.
"It was too much to hope we could begin to move the gaming community and cyberspace past being a cesspool of anonymous bigots, racists and vulgar children. Huzzah for the status quo. May no one ever force us out of our comfort zone."
I dislike it when people say children. It isn't children, it's people of all ages. They may be racist but you sir are ageist! It's a pet peeve of mine, when most of the time it's young men swearing. I hardly ever hear children swear. They are always friendly, and if they do swear and it gets annoying I've asked them to stop and they do. :P Like wise, sometimes I swear a lot and I've had young teens ask me to stop and I do. So it's not children.
*cough* Back on topic. Blizzard probably had some real doubts to begin with. I'm glad they decided they would continue to look through alternate methods to improving their forums. Having my real name on a forum so out in the obvious does make me worry about my privacy. I know nothing would ever happen, but there would be a few people that would probably face some bad things. Someone eventually would get stabbed and we would hear about how someone planned for 2 months to their guild mate because they wiped their raid and stole everything from their guild vault. Something stupid like that. It would be bound to happen. Haha. And it all happened because it was so easy to find out the persons full name. :P
Last but not least I also think it's funny when they said every voice matters. Soo cute!

Hey Warsaw, remember in that other thread where you totally ditched the Gifted camp? Haha, does this bring you back any at all?

I have a camp? I hope not.
All that it comes down to is that everyone should form their own opinion and I feel they shouldn't blindly follow others. If I have an opinion you agree with, that's fine, but be sure to keep your opinion as your own.
I'll be the first to admit that on discussions like this, for example, Archer and I have different ways to approach things, but at the end of the day, I completely respect his opinion and I get the impression he respects mine.. even in the times they are opposite.
I view Warsaw the same way as long as his conduct is constructive which it has been lately.

I hope people will remember this next time something happens that they don't like. Blizzard is no where near as evil as people think. Despite what some claim, they do care about their fanbase and namesake.
SCLegacy is the best example I've found of a well-moderated community. I rarely see too much around here get out of hand and everyone here seems to be relatively friendly here.
To me, this shows that moderation is the best method of creating a create community as opposed to things such as real names.
Rest In Peace, Old Friend.
