Thread: Battle.net forums to use real ID only

Dunno if this has been posted yet, but THIS is the main reason that I think adding your name to any virtual ID is typically a bad idea, especially for a game that's so massively widespread.

I'm going to post a direct copy paste from what I posted in the TL version of this thread (it applies more to TL because TL has way more people nerd raging over it than here, so read with a grain of salt).

My opinion is that most people here are way overreacting. They're just having knee jerk reactions to anything that sounds bad. Get a grip on reality, what percentage of you actually post on the forums? Why are so many of you raging over a new forum policy on a forum you don't even use? If you do use the forum, then by all means complain. No one has even tried to see how this will work yet, or has given it a chance. It's ridiculous, and for those of you who have started posting personal information of other people, you're the sole cause for what you're complaining about. Quit being hypocrites.

This single issue isn't a huge deal, but rather another annoyance in a sea of odd decisions. I'll simply neglect to post on their official forums since I'm not interested in attaching my real name to it. I've spent the better part of the past 3 years contributing to the SC2GDF...brainstorming on units, sharing ideas, confessing annoyances, dreaming up concepts, making jokes, submitting bug reports...all because I was passionate about the game. All of that will cease the moment they implement RealId on their forums in favor of this one.

Blizzard, any other stupid ideas you wish to spring upon us before the game releases?

I cant remember the time they made a policy decision that seemed even remotely inline with whats best for the community.

Be aware that I'm watching THIS THREAD specifically from now on for infractions, including Blizzard disrespect. Be sure to share your thoughts and not bash the company.
As much as I'm on the same page as you guys, let's try to change the discussion to explore other thoughts, even ones we might disagree with.

For the record, I am against this Real.id/forum change before I continue this post.

Let's look at the facts that Blizzard may be looking at and try to understand their angles.. even if we disagree with them. Consider this my attempt to look at this from a constructive conversation.

    1. The forums are a privilege and not a right. I'm sure everyone knows that. For that reason, we can choose not to post there and therefore "save" our identity. This is the ultimate choice we can choose to protect it. I can see how this would make people who DO post there more paranoid about their ID being banned in a sort of subconscious angle.

    2. The major reason why many people feel that flaming is acceptable is that they have nothing to risk because of their shield of anonymity. There are many types of people who flame, ranging from good people who get pissed, people who have a short fuse on their temper and those who flame to get a reaction. Across all three angles, I can see "in theory" how this would do a reduction of all three.

    3. People who don't act like they have an anonymous account, who try to be "good posters" in theory have nothing to fear. In short, if they do nothing wrong, nothing wrong will happen to them.

    4. This is all under the assumption that gaming is an acceptable medium that people are not ashamed of personally.

    5. Including improvements to the forums will counter the negative impact when it's revealed, showing a more usable, followable and intuitive forum that people will want to follow or at least contribute.

    6. Most importantly, when you take the scope to years and years, the concerns on this will be trivial over time as people "accept" it.

    ----------------

I'm sure there are more points, and I welcome you all who feel like they want to add some can do so. Again, I'm not trying to defend them... I'm trying to post thoughts that might LEGITLY lead into this decision.

Actually, there have been many with WoW over the years. I'm not trying to smash your argument Archer, but I suspect you haven't followed WoW all that much, right?

You didnt counter my statement in any way. You actually cant since it was a statement regarding my experience with Blizzard and your not part of that. Nonetheless I find it interesting that you always seem to be the "Blizzard defender" whenever a situation like this comes up. Even if you claim you arnt.

I think you need to better define "Blizzard disprespect" if your going to be banning people for it. Blizzard is clearly making many decisions that the community strongly dissagrees with and if fear of infraction is meant as a blanket statement against voicing your displeasure at the current system then what use are these forums in the first place. I mean that would be as backward as alienating almost all of your community and then claiming you were doing it to foster more of a community. But no one..would ever...do that....right?

Yes their is a certain level of civility that should be extended to all online discourse. But praytell Gifted what form of the communities outrage would you like to see? My vote would be outrage sprinkled with kittens.

Well, in this case I felt it was more "making your comment more accurate", not defending Blizzard. Note, I didn't say anything about SC2 and my scope was "over the years". That's not to say they haven't done bad things either (most specifically recently as the real.id/forum thing directly affects them as well.)

Have you followed wow by the way? You didn't answer that.

Fair enough, explanation helps. First, we won't be banning people for it, we'll infract people for it and if they accumulate enough points, they'll be banned. Per our FAQ, the relevant guideline that helps understand it is as follows:
Flaming or insulting any other individuals(not restricted to members of this site) is highly inappropriate and discouraged. Note that this does not only include profanity, but any other kind of insult or disrespect. Please treat others with respect. If someone flames you, the proper course of action is to report his/her post, and to avoid retaliation in the thread. This especially applies for Blizzard Entertainment employees and SC:L staff.
To elaborate on it better, we also can view "Blizzard entertainment" or "Activision-Blizzard" (the company itself) as an individual if that helps you visualize what not to directly insult. I don't feel this needs any further discussion though, further questions can be directed to the FAQ or a friendly PM to your flavor of SCL staff member you'd like to talk ask.

Bottom line, this shouldn't limit discussion what-so-ever. Blizzard disrespect is an infraction that basically an extension of "no flaming". And many discussion regarding discontent on a subject, especially one that I feel people SHOULD dislike such as this one, is encouraged as long as it's respectful. I ultimately believe we're on the same page, say your opinion on how much this sucks to your hearts content, just don't flame Blizzard.

*cackles* Gotta love da kittens. <3 I'll say this, I'm holding back my rant, it's large man, trust me, very large. (and it's NOT defending Blizzard's decision)

At this point, the thread has been well, and I'm trying to share thoughts and create more of a discussion than what will obviously be. (Let's face it, if I didn't try to explore Blizzard's side, we could have 10 more page of worthy people linking personal information and saying this is a poor decision, myself included) Even as I wrote the above points I wanted to stab 2-3 of them as I very much suspect the thoughts that I could examine were flawed IMHO.

Hopefully I answered your question, you know.. the one which you constantly answer my questions with? *winks*

Lets try this. I am sure Blizzard as a person is very very very nice. However their recent actions are some of the worst in the company's long history. Indeed rivaling some of the worst policy decisions in the history of gaming.

But I am sure the people are very nice people who just happen to be doing terrible things.

    That kosher?
