i actually like this, mainly because as said it will curve the enevital rise of trolls after release

now as for the people stating that they are scared due to a facebook invasions from spammers and others that find out ur real name. first off, u can make it so that only ur friends see ur info, and if u dont want to add the people, u can simply ignore them really. and so what if someone does a google search on me. have fun with that :P oooo i have a gym membership!......... see where im going here?

they can't hurt you unless you give them the power to do so.

Don't put up information you aren't comfortable with the world knowing on the INTERNET.

That was the crux of my statement. By savvy I never meant I was some sort of internet wizard able to hide anything, nor was I trying, I meant understanding the open and public nature of the internet and not putting things there myself that I don't want others to see. You've proven my point about anonymity, it's nonexistent. To believe otherwise is foolish. In the case of the battle.net forums all blizzard has done is remove the small amount of legwork a person needs to do to figure out your real name. I welcome the change. I will use the forum because I'm a person who is unafraid and not embarrassed by who I am. The ctrl+alt+del comic probably has it right though. Some people do not care about their reputation in any case and will continue to be intolerable. That's what real life is like. There are nice people and there are idiots. The internet has, for the past 20 years or so, allowed all the small, pathetic closet idiots of the world to come online and act tough while they hide behind their screen names. Well now if you want to be an internet bully you're risking your real life reputation. I can't wait to see how this experiment pans out.

And what did my age say on Rogue Market? It won't load and I'm curious. My real age is 31.

This is the most ridiculous idea ever. What they're going to accomplish, is that nobody uses their forums, and it won't stop trolls. Who know how many of them have like 12 years old. And you could enter a fake name, so it won't stop any troll at all.

Just read this from the WoW forums:
Just to respond to those that don't think we read through all of these responses and threads, we do and have been. We will continue monitoring feedback as well.

We put a lot of thought into this change and have a long-term vision for the Real ID service and wanted to make sure that we communicated ahead of time and very clearly as to what will be changing and how. Keep in mind that posting is optional, and we recognize that some players will choose not to utilize the Real ID feature in game or post on the forums and support everyone's individual choice on using or not using it.

This is obviously new ground for us and for you as well, but we want to make sure we're creating a great social-gaming service that people will want to use. We just want to make sure that if people are sharing feedback, that they keep it constructive, and yes, as I said, we are reading.
I would suggest Blizzard that they perform a sanity check before deciding what to post. They literally said that they know that some players aren't going to post, then follow with "we want to create a great social-gaming service".

They're understimating the amount of people that won't want to post their real name. For example: let's suppose you're posting from your job, and your boss finds that in a search and don't likes it. Terrible damage, and for what? Most people does it, and doesn't impair their work, but most bosses are stupid.

All this social stuff is going too far. Society is a piece of shit, it won't be any better just because you take it online. But of course, enterprises think that they can make money with that, just because Facebook could. But Facebook has a 100% valid argument for people to want to share their real names. That's what their service is all about. Battle.net, on the other hand, is not.

Real name or nick doesn't makes any difference about trolls, because your nick is associated with your battle.net account with your games on it, so they can block you the same.

Firstly you dont have to post on the forums, but I'm sure this will overspill into the game itself, eventually we will be playing each others and our names will appear on the loading screen...

I guess its not a bad change... there is now accountability to user posts, I'm sure all the flamers and trolls will disappear, and the forum will be a much better but smaller place.

This REALID on forums has less to do with streamlining social networking through games, and more to do with advertising and partnership fees. This is an article from May. Blizzard and Facebook are now partners.

Well done Blizzard, sorry, I mean't ACTIVISION-Blizzard. I get those two mixed up now

You had to suspect that something like this was behind it. It just strains credulity to suggest that Blizzard executives actually think that this is a good idea (as opposed to a lucrative one).

SinsWage, you have the right idea and we are mostly in agreement.

Unlike you, however, I'm not comfortable with people being able to locate my place of residence (or those of my family members) thanks to an internet search based off of a gaming website that I visit. I know that it can be done, but I would like to try and make it as difficult as possible for the average internet user.

    PS. - Yep, it's 31.

Blizzard has been going downhill ever since their merger with Activision, and has been making strange business decisions since. It's like they're being corrupted by Bobby and losing the integrity they've spent so long building up which made a name for them. They are no longer the company I used to respect and adore.

This single issue isn't a huge deal, but rather another annoyance in a sea of odd decisions. I'll simply neglect to post on their official forums since I'm not interested in attaching my real name to it. I've spent the better part of the past 3 years contributing to the SC2GDF...brainstorming on units, sharing ideas, confessing annoyances, dreaming up concepts, making jokes, submitting bug reports...all because I was passionate about the game. All of that will cease the moment they implement RealId on their forums in favor of this one.

Blizzard, any other stupid ideas you wish to spring upon us before the game releases?
