Thread: Expanded Multiplayer Map Concept

    Default Expanded Multiplayer Map Concept

My trigger skills are non-existent, although by the time the third part of the trilogy is released, perhaps I may have the knowledge and understanding to pull this off, as long as someone else doesn't beat me to it.

We all know how in the Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, the player will have far more variety in forces available than with the multiplayer. However, what if we were to create standard multiplayer maps, that were based around giving the player full access to EVERYTHING in the single-player campaigns (thus why we would have to wait til the third part of the trilogy is released, because we have no idea of everything available to the Zerg or Protoss yet). And when I mean everything, I mean everything; including buildings, building upgrades and mercenaries, not just units.

Something like this is easily possible, and by one mapmaker or another, will be made. I was curious how everyone would feel about this idea. Would you be willing to play this type of multiplayer over the standard multiplayer, etc?

Too many units makes for a very convoluted counter system. It creates a lot of redundancy, and entire tech paths that serve little purpose.

Less is more, simply put. Hell, I'd remove some units from the current multiplayer because I feel there's already too many. They would be better saved for the expansions.

As for the topic, I don't think it requires any triggering, probably just the data editor. I would love an idea like this. The whole point of it isn't to be balanced, Demo, it's supposed to be mindless wtf fun and/or raging. If you don't want a convoluted map with complex or confusing countering strategies, there's always normal melee.

This idea reminds me of the good old days of Race Warring on that Seven Sins map (which was a completely imbalanced map) where 8 people would random and everyone of the same race would ally upon scouting each other out. The map had completely asymmetrical terrain and some bases were way more advantageous than others. Good old times.

Depending on how the expansions play out and how many units are in each this could be a fun idea. Though, I do agree that if there are too many units it wouldnt be too great for multiplayer. Singleplayer its fun because it is a non-competitive environment where you can feel free to goof around and do whatever. However, if you bring it into a competitive multiplayer environment people would probably tend to only use the best units and ignore others.

Most of the unit roles are already filled with what we have, so by the time the last expansion rolls around I think there would be a lot of overlap and wasted units. But, like I said... depends on how things play out.

Yes it could be done very easily via the data editor, all you'd need to do is give the worker and buildings buttons to build or train the building or unit respectively. To make it fun though the units might have to be rebalanced to avoid having the majority of the units redundant.
