I think we're forgetting the best anime ever made.
Hahaha. But seriously, we need more anime the quality of Akira.

Indeed - I'd love to see Japanese animation of such amazing technical quality applied to something other than a thoroughly depressing and gory film.
Actually, come to think about it, I was really impressed by Ponyo on a Cliff By the Sea. I've seen that flick three times in its entirety so far - it's good stuff!

Hayao Miyazaki's best work is by far Princess Mononoke.

Seconded. That's some of the craziest shit I've ever seen, I love it.
I've never really understood the fear some people have towards anime, you can't say it's all on thing or another, there's just an enormous variety in it.
Tychus: I recomend you try and watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, it's got Manly stuff and shit blowing up... only that most of it is done by a hot girl, not what I'd call "emo" IMO.![]()

Personally, my favorite animes were:
Dragonball Z
Outlaw Star
Yu Yu Hakusho
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (For sheer nonsense factor)

Not sure if I saw that particular series but I have seen other Ghost In The Shell. Again, it's all terribly shit to me. I try every now and then but, realistically, I doubt anything will ever change my mind. It is infinitely better than Final Fantasy and other such bullshit that anime influences. Also, if you think shit blowing up is what makes something manly than you completely missed the point. If I wanted that I'd watch a Hollywood flick which has none of the androgynous, emo, or general bullshit that anime has.
The closest I've come to liking an anime movie is Akira and some Max Payne-ish type movie I saw back in my middle school days. That was almost good. Those are all old anime though and that's why I like it more. With each passing year Japanese males get more and more feminine. I feel sorry for them.

b..b..but shit blowing up is awesome!
Can't say I agree completely but the design has definitely changed in the past few years towards a more lean and angular design of characters, maybe that's what you're referring to.
However at least some animes are going the other way around, most Bleach characters are becoming more and more ridiculously muscular with each new issue![]()
