First one is the best. The first time I watched it was alone in a dark room at four o'clock in the morning, with headphones on (in general, that's the best way to watch horror movies). One of the most atmospheric and intense experiences out there.
Ridley Scott's next project by the way is a new Alien movie (and hopefully that means H.R. Giger's direct involvement as well). Couldn't be a better way to get the series back on track after the AvP movies.

This man is a hero.
Being upset that their children were exposed to horror material when they intended to have a fun night/day at the movies is hardly stupid. If it were the people complaining for themselves then, yes, it would be stupid. However, when you go see a PG-13 movie you expect content suitable for that.

For the record, I've read all four books... well, audiobooked them. But still, I have to say I enjoyed the series as a whole, and feel that it got WAY better by book 3/4.

Eclipse has a fight scene between wolves and vampires. As far as I understand some "people" die. There's also discussion of the dreaded "sex."
What happens in the PA2 trailer? A single guy gets thrown into a wall, and a chick lingers in a doorway. Horror material? I think not.
These people are stupid.

All of the above is fantasy. The preview, however, contains somewhat real-life situations which would ignite a child's imagination. If I were a child, Paranormal Activity would scare me far more than, say, The Ring or whatever else people consider scary and have a much stronger effect than obviously fantasy situations. The situations in Paranormal Activity have the basis of being alone and awake at night and having your imagination take the best of you. That is something that every child experiences even more so when something has scared them to keep them up.
Things are never as simple as they're stupid or wrong. Try to understand where they're coming from before you immediately jump to conclusions. Besides, this and a few other circumstances cannot speak for the entirety of a state .. unless you want to accept all of Canada's many stereotypes.
That being said, I saw the original Paranormal Activity thinking it would be one of the scariest movies ever and it was, quite possibly, the most comedic I have ever seen. Me and just about the whole theater was laughing was they took down the veil of "this is real". I'll never understand how people thought that was scary.
