Maybe Blizzard should add a non-rank ladder similar to what FFA is using so that you can test out your newer race, its faster than custom games. But hopefully they will have a good system in place.

It would be a good idea, but there might be side effects that we don't immediate see. I don't really know for sure since I was never a hard core ladder player. Just a casual ladder player. Hopefully with SC2 I can get that hard core RTS side out again. It's been a long time since a RTS has had be hooked.
Until then I'll just roll Protoss... like a toss! -.- haha

Well I feel like the non-rank ladder might just dilute the players even more than the 1v1/2v2/UMS/single-player etc... might. If you have too many things going on, a ladder loses it's meaning.
That's one of the reasons for which blizzard didn't want to incorporate a "slow mode" ladder.

I didn't mean for that to be taken srsly, but yeah, I did hear he was switching to terran. Just having fun is all.
Like when playing SSBB we're all like "real men use items". I like playing random for fun.
Now to address this srsly,
As far as ranking per race, it's not a bad idea, but just because you play random doesn't mean you'll get a fairly averaged out ranking between the races because random is random. Otherwise we don't give random a ranking - just a ranking among TPZ, but then how does match placement work if you play random? Yes you could just average your rank between TZP, but then the fairness of your placement becomes chance.
I say if youre that worried about record do some offline practice. Remember we have hard AIs now.

If "hard" AI is anything like in Wc3, I doubt that'll be very much help :/
If there are race specific rankings, I don't think it would be a problem to give random it's own ranking. Picking random and getting protoss is different from just picking protoss (for both players).
If you're much better with one race than you are with the others, it's true that it'll take longer to reach your true "averaged" rank, but at least you'll be getting there. The more you play, the more appropriately matched you are. If the difference is too huge, then you might need to work on a race specifically.
I think your idea is fully viable as well though!
...Actually, on second thought (once I was done writing the above paragraph), I think your way of having random count for each race is better... you'll just need to play a bunch of placement matches to be placed with all of your races and then you'll get real matches all the time. That would be perfect. And you can quickly see which race you need to work on by just looking at your rank.
Liking it.

It needs to be done by race, that would keep people playing against players with a close skill most of the time. If you're very good with one race, and switch race, you will lose a lot, get a lower rank, and only then stabilize. If you return to your main race, you will own people there until you get to your natural rank for that race.
The worst case would be switching to random, then you will be playing out of rank until you get the same skill on the 3 races.

This reminds me of being able to audit a class, lol. I'm a science major, but I'm not going to venture to take a poly sci class unless I am sure that it won't screw up the rest of my GPA.
Just like I am a Zerg player, and I don't want to try out Terran strategies if I think they might screw up my overall rating and drop me down a league.
