Thread: Bashiok says Blizzard ok with worthless units

It's interesting that the boring Carrier was reinstated because it was an iconic unit, however, I haven't heard the forum shut up about the arbiter in FOREVER.

It's quite obvious what people are asking for, why don't they just give in?

I hardly think they know what the community wants. Chat channels, arbiter (NOT carrier), Lurker, etc etc.

Because giving in what the fandom wants will make them lose integrity and lose points in my book. They are developers, not the fans. Also, I wouldn't take the community manager of Diablo 3 too seriously about StarCraft 2 related information. I wonder why he's suddenly stepping in Karune's job?

Blizzard ok with useless units...No more micro-transactions (premium maps), no new units for expansions, Beta ending for 1 month only to come back for barely a week or two...4-month beta, bugs with the servers and map hosting, Blizzard 100% sure they want to release the game in the summer, no chat channels, lots of missing features for BNET and limitations on the BNET experience due to exclusion of age-old features...Near-perfect balance not yet achieved...

I'm beginning to SERIOUSLY think that Blizzard is rushing this game. Perhaps they got tired of making people wait for this game and developing it (since 2003!), that they just want to get it out and be done with it already.

And I have a bad feeling that SC2 gameplay will quickly degenerate into UMS maps for most of the people, while only a few hardcore fans will play actual SC2. (Take the example of how many people play C&C3 and RA3) Then Diamond League will truly turn into the god-like league where only the strongest players on the planet reside.

Agreed. Pandering to the fans is exactly how we wound up with two Dark Templar models in the first place. Sure, going with what fans think they want might be a good decision (e.g. the game's new look versus the original announcement's look) but the fans can be really, really wrong as well.

As for Blizzard's comment, it's important to note that they said those units would see less use at some levels of play. The reason they're being kept is because they still see use at other levels of play. Not everyone is an absolute beginner just as how not everyone is an elite professional.

Starcraft 2 was design by committee...

My thoughts on the Mothership are simple. It's a unit made for micro with a VERY poor response on it's movement. The only reason I don't use it more is because when you use a vital ability, such as vortex, it takes 5 seconds to build up speed, go 2 spaces and slow down speed so it can cast a spell after the units are dead or gone from there.

If they were to fix the acceleration, or increase the range of the spellcast, I'd be "more accepting" of it. I'm not going to touch the subject of if it should be removed or not because Bashiok said it perfectly, Blizzard is ok with it being there, so I find it a moot point to talk about in this forum.

If I wanted to bring up that concern, I'd bring it up in the Bashiok thread.

I don't want a Lurker or an Aribiter.

I guess I do want chat channels though. Very badly :p

If it can possibly add some tactical depth, I say go for it.

That being said, the mothership in its' current state just makes me a sad panda.
Also, where are my Lurkers? We all know Zerg would feel nicer if they use a few more units, right?

The problem with the mothership is just its speed. That is it. It kinda sucks that it is unique and it requires the hugely expensive fleet beacon, but those could be OK if it could keep up with ANYTHING.

    Carrier:
    Speed - 1.875
    Accel - 1.0625

    Mutalisk:
    Speed - 3.75
    Accel - 3.25

    Banshee:
    Speed - 2.75
    Accel - 3.25

    Mothership:
    Speed - 1.4062
    Accel - .3125

Aside from that... yea I suppose it could be "ok" to have a unit that doesnt really have a use in real games. It doesnt really make sense from a competitive view, but it doesnt change much. I kinda think of it like the nuke of BW.
