Thread: Bashiok says Blizzard ok with worthless units

The only time I see the mothership being viable is on 1v1 and your forces are going around raiding the map...then you need to place the mothership strategically at your still-viable-expansions to quickly recall your units incase of a bad raid / counter raid.

But yah if you are not going air, that is one god damn expensive unit.

its worthless, its a so-so unit, that won't make a difference if you have it and if you don't have it.

Though I'd like all units to be viable and useful.

There are more useless units in SC2 than BW, but I wouldn't go that far. Reapers provide opportunity for micro and boost Terran's early game since Marines are the weakest T1 units.

Problem with Archon and Carrier is that Immortals and Void Rays respectively have taken their roles for cheaper, but I don't see how Dark Templars are useless. Maybe you need to play more matches.

Zerglings? Really?... Your posts need to be more informed and backed up
Just my observations from the beta. I never lost a placement match and was always put into Diamond/Platinum. Judging by high-level replays, it seems that my observations were mostly correct.

I've used Motherships sometimes, they can be pretty useful. I've seen it demolish an oponent in a big macro game because he didn't see the mothership and had no detection, his army was wiped out by the protoss army backed up by a mothership before he could get his detection out. Recall on your expansion can be pretty good as well and vortex definitely has it's uses.

I haven't seen a totally useless unit in SC2. Maybe some units are "less useful" like the Terran reaper, which is only ever used at the start. But maybe that's just because players haven't figured out a good use for them mid-game.

Flying money pit at the moment. Can't see why Toss players would want to go for it in multi. Sooo many other, better options.

If they were cheaper, they might be a bit more practical.

    Reasonably good special abilities though.

What do you guys think, this unit was canned... I say bring this back and remove the stupid Mothership.

    Dark Seeker / Star Relic
Role: Protoss air unit spell caster

The star relic cloaked nearby units and buildings when it was stationary. It had the Detonate ability and cast the hallucination spell.[3] It was warped in at the stargate and required a fleet beacon to be produced. The fleet beacon researched its special abilities
How about keep the stationary cloak ability, or have it as a Toggle,
Once cloak is toggled off, it can cast its spell that gives a target unit the ability to have cloak (while moving and attacking as well) for a short period of time.
Maybe give it a very very small recall ability as well? 1 Collusus or 3 stalkers? I dunno.

    Side note:

I notice a lot of Dark Templar inspired units were canned due to Nostalgia and/or replaced by....who knows what
(The Tempest, The Dark Seeker,Twighlight Archon, etc)
Ironically, the Carrier, the Phoenix, and the Archon have been met with mixed opinion, despite being nostalgic (asides from the Phoenix), and the Phoenix only being used due to its necessary role as an air superiority fighter.

That touches a good point: Even if some units are not usefull in 1v1 what about 2v2? Itīs a completely different enviroment and there is no reason for 2v2 to be an any less legimitate Gameplay mode than 1v1.

Regarding the Mothership, I remember making a thread about Protoss needing a massable flyer caster unit like 10 months ago. Starcraft just doesn't lend itself to having large singular units, unless they decide on increasing something like the Mothership's armor. Units like Vikings just focus fire and forget. This game has too much rapid-fire range combined with excellent pathing and its causing problems with units like the Ultralisk.

How many of you think that units like the Mothership and Thor have been kept in the game solely because of their possible representation in the single player story? It feels like that have the Mothership in the storyline and have probably already made an amazing cinematic with a Mothership flying around in it and that's why the Devs feel the need to keep it in the game?

I still think every unit has a use and that some are just more situational than others. None of them really feel worthless to me. Has everybody forgotten about the Queen in SC1? Infested Terrans? Scouts?

Archer, you're like a fucking Blizzard Tabloid. Everytime I see your posts, your titles and content are taking Blizzard "news" or posts, and twisting and sensationalizing them to make them seem more sinister and bigger than they are. I used to really respect your opinions and posts. I'd rather hear from DSquid than you these days. How about a little respect and integrity?
