Yeah. To be honest, the whole backstory of 40K feels like it was written by an Ork.

Ever read about the Battle of Stalingrad? Not "getting" Warhammer 40k's backstory is a sign to me that you probably don't read a lot. Here's some primer material to get you started:

They are accounts of living a brutal "orkish" existence in various totalitarian regimes during the 20th century from it's early beginnings up until it's end from the people who lived under them. These books comprise only a tiny fraction of a fraction of the suffering and human misery endured under these regimes. I find it darkly humorous that various people, attempting to degrade the Warhammer 40k universe, imply that it is unrealistic or exaggerated somehow. Unfortunately, this isn't so. Pick a decade in the 20th century and crack open a history book. Start with Poland circa 1942. Makes the worst Warhammer 40k story you've ever read look dull. Or perhaps try reading Robert Conquest's "The Great Terror" where he describes Stalin's rule of the USSR during the 30's. Then, if you're really in the mood to be depressed, read all the accounts of visiting "fellow travelers" from the United States during this era describe in glowing praise the wonders of the USSR under Stalin's Rule. There was absolutely no hope.

Oh, I get the backstory all right. It just feels like in each edition, GW decides it isn't violent enough, and so ups the ante even more, to the point of ridiculousness, and sometimes even beyond. So in other words, like an Ork thought it up, and then Rick Priestly fleshed it out. And all those things seem more like the things the IoM would do.
And Astartes, how would you like to join a little group of mine called the "Troll Squad", used only when people on other forums are giving me crap. I'll let you spread the word of your Emperor on those places.
