wow. ok. that was all very dramatic.

My opinion? I think whether or not dropped or unburrowed...ultras reek havoc on any army. yes focus fire would be an issue. but if you sent in some lings or something as a omg im not prepared for this army, then hit them with ultras...im pretty sure the other player would drop a few bricks. lol. Im just thinking either way of the marine that is marching....shooting lings and stuff...goin yeah im badass...woo we win....then a friggen like 40 ton thing...drops or pops....Im pretty sure as a marine i would run.

yeah focus fire would be a problem. if i ever got to tier 3 lol -_-"

i would like to know how many times you people, (who wants to drop the ultra)
have actually tried using them, and by that i don't mean just popping 1 up and seeing it die under mass tank fire but rather investing your time for it and it's upgrades like most other tier 3 units...

I've played against it about 4 times now (as P) and each game, it's safe to say that the ultras lost them the game. If they just got mustache lords instead, they would have remained in the game or even come out ahead.

The ultra just doesn't have enough HP/DPS to make it worthwhile. Either more hydras/roaches or brood lords would be a much, much better investment.

I still agree that Ultra dropping can be very good, whether the opposing army is in a defensive or mobile position. All you have to do really is alter your army composition to compensate. Hydra/Roach can't break a Terran siege line? Complement with some mutas and/or broodlords, just enough to force the defensive line to shift to a more offensive position.

Some might argue "If your gonna use broodlords, why use Ultras?" The answer is quite simple. The strategy changes from a 2 part strategy as originally discussed to a 3 part strategy called "divide and conquer." (1) Using only, say 2-3 Broodlords and 6-8 Mutas, and a small ground force, big enough to make the opponent shift forces from elsewhere, but not your whole army, feign/fake the inital assault. (2) As the enemy shifts, drop/nydus your ultras (and a few lings/blings for extra thought). This should cause a second shift of forces. (3) As your opponent is now engaged by 2 threats, send the rest of your army in, and hit on a 3rd side if possible. Beautiful chaos and destruction should ensue.

Additional notes: (a) Hitting an opponent that has not yet gotten anti-air air (viking, VR, phoenix, corriptors, mutas, etc.) units makes this much more powerful. (b) May not be a viable strategy against top-tier opponents unless you can at least match their apm. Reason: macro heavy early, micro heavy during assault.

My personal apm peaks at about 60-65, so I would not be able to pull this off against, say, the little one or dimaga, for example, but I could see this being used against low and even mid-tier players, as well as an educational tool for noobs in a how not to get your arse handed to you kind of way.
