Thread: Thought: Zerg Eye Sentry

I've just been wondering, we know the Zerg use giant Sauron-like eye sentries, they'd make good static detection... will they be in the SC2 campaign? Should they be? Would they be good in multiplayer? Should they perhaps be the Zerg's static detection? Do Zerg even need static building detection considering the Overseer is highly accessible and has a huge vision radius?

I'd like some thoughts on this.

I am instantly reminded of that witch doctor dude's sentry in WC3.

I kinda liked Overlords having detection, the change for them to become Overseers is like giving Zerg Science Vessels.

I sorta think it'd be cool if they could get this eyeball thing in crawler form, and make it a stealth mission to have to dodge between all the moving eyeball stalks, or finding ways to distract or disable them to slip past unnoticed.

I am instantly reminded of the part in Liberty's Crusade when Kerrigan and Michael run into that giant eye.

And now I am thinking of a Zerg version of Xel'Naga Towers.

Nah, too much like Terran Radar Towers. I could see it in singleplayer for a more "complete" Zergbase with more organs. Maybe (hopefully) on a Zerg TILESET. Tilesets are either Terran instalations or wasteland. Auir got a tileset but itīs just ruins and Jungle, not actually populated area. And I expect "deeply infested areas" to have something of the taint of the warp from Dawn of War, a really alien and warped landscape.

Does the Spore Crawler not detect anymore?

Would be awesome for single player as a doodad. For mutliplayer I'm not so sure...it directy overlaps with the Overlord/seer which has always been the traditional vision mechanic for the Zerg.

Perhaps if its purpose was slightly different? Consider that it functioned similar to the Terran sensor tower only that it detects bio patterns. You'd have to command the eye building to scan for lifeforms in an extended radius, and doing so will show any heat sources related to biological units with an intensity level based on the unit size. So instead of showing a question mark like the sensor tower you get a blotch of color ranging from green to red. It even picks up neutral animals which can be misleading.

Using this ability causes immense strain on the brood, and any buildings connected to that same patch of creep when the ability is used is temporarily halted for a few seconds afterwards.

I think for single player, it'd be neat if it extended the vision of all your creep. You do get different stuff in single player, so I don't see why that couldn't be one of them. Get one of these babies and your creep vision is increased. Or you keep creep's vision.
Have overlord drop creep, and then run. You now have a temporary stationary scout while the OL does it's own thing.

Does anyone think that the Overseer should have a better model than the current "slimmed" version?

It would look nice, having the eye attached to the Overseer that has a new color scheme (Zerg carapace style), with its web-like appendages holding the eye on its back... overall, you can tell it was mutated from the Overlord and looks cool at the same time.

Right now, the Overseer's model just feels... messy with the team color all over.

Personally, I think the Overseer should use a compound eye. It's main job is to see things. A human-like eye is really the wrong kind of device for that.
