Thread: Should the Infestor, Corruptor and Overseer be Renamed?

Default Should the Infestor, Corruptor and Overseer be Renamed?

Of the three races, the Zerg have undoubtedly received the most drastic changes thematically over the course of the game. However, the unit's names have remained much the same. As a result, some of the units' names no longer fit their overall feel. The two major culprits, I feel, are the Infestor and Corruptor. Let's take a look at them:

    Infestor:
When the unit was first introduced, the unit was pretty much named after its ability to infest enemy structures which then produce infested units. As such, the name was quite fitting. Over the course of development, the Infestor feels much more like a walking sac carrying all sorts of diseases or biological weapons and no longer have much connection with the idea of an infestation of anything.

    Corruptor:
Originally, the Corruptor was named for its ability to convert destroyed enemy units into temporary air turrets. In a way, it did feel somewhat like it was slowly corrupting enemy units and so, the name worked. Since this passive ability was removed, Blizzard has tried giving Corruptors an ability called 'Corruption' in order to still fit its name. At first, it was still sort of okay but its current form (covers an enemy unit in slime which increases the amount of damage that they receive) is really stretching things. In my opinion, this one is in need of a reevaluation.

    Overseer:
Don't think this unit needs as much of a rename as the above two but I thought I would mention it in light of the new abilities and roles it has received. Currently, between detection, Changelings, Infested Terrans and Contaminate, the Overseer feels very much like some sort of cross between a spy and saboteur. Should its name be changed to reflect these roles? I don't know.

Now, identifying which units ought to be renamed is one thing. Finding a suitable name, on the other hand, is a bit more challenging; not only because it has to fit its role, lots of people have already gotten used to the old names. I can think of a few, but they aren't quite fantastic:

Infestor ~ As it spreads diseases:
    - Infector
    - Vector

Corruptor ~ Because it does sort of look like it:
    - Cthullisk
    - Squid

I do agree that the Corruptor could use a name change. Having a target unit just take more damage has barely any resonance with the name 'Corruptor' as turning defeated enemies into stationary turrets under your control. As you put it, the current ability is stretching it quite a bit, and I felt that the previous ability to temporarily disable a building was also a bit of a stretch (especially since that's like a 'bonus' that the unit has, as opposed to being a strong part of its identity, like the original passive ability to turn things into a Corrupted Mass was).

For the Infestor...I wouldn't mind a name change. "Infector" does seem fitting. I feel that the ability to mind control units does make the name "Infestor" appropriate, although now that it's such an investment to get to, it really doesn't seem to be a core ability of the Infestor anymore. Perhaps not enough to warrant the name 'Infestor'.

I'm fine with the Overseer's name as it is, though :].

Why change the name of things when the new abilities haven't even settled down yet?

They never changed the name of the Phoenix after it lost the AE explosion ability that clearly inspired it's name. How long ago did that happen? At least a year ago I guess.
