Thread: Firefly similarities

Alot of people seem to read my comment as if I were saying stealing/getting inspired from something else is bad. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that some people do it well, in the way that it's not too obvious and therefore looses it's own feeling to it, whereas some people do it bad, my opinion being that the people behind Firefly did it bad, due to the aforementioned things such as bad acting, bad scriptwriting, bad cameraangling etc.

If you look at "The Amerigo" cutscene, you'll see just how much StarCraft stole from Aliens, but the way it comes through is still in a very cool and entertaining way.
    "The Amerigo": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwtjYW1qmjM

    "Aliens" Corridors:

Now don't tell me the set itself for the cutscene isn't 100% the same... yet still it feels cool and entertaining enough in itself. Had the characters then started mimic'ing dialogue from Star Wars or some other popluar sci-fi thing, it might have started becoming a fishy experience rather than the cool one it is.

That's where Firefly fails. It's just too full of references it's choking any original material it has...

I will say Firefly's music would be right at home in SC2 for the Terrans.

Agreed. I hope we see some easter egg nods to the show and movie. Maybe even the theme song in the juke box.

I still get kind of sad when I hear that song, though. It's kind of like an unexpected tribute to the whole, sad story of Firefly.

Fox did indeed "take the sky" from Whedon and Co.

Dunno about anyone else, but "Firefly" was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the Terran music for SC2, as well as some of the more 'earthy' lines from the units.

The scene I think you're referring to in a good ten to fifteen minutes in where the crew are trying to board an abandoned ship in order to steal food supplies to be sold in the black market.

Again, these are rather different procedures. In SC1, the Terrans had all manner of salvaging vehicles and the ship was an utter wreck and practically blown to pieces. Where as in Firefly, the main characters were doing things by hand, were after a specific piece of cargo and the ship was in considerably better shape than the one in SC1. Hence, the only thing in common between those two aside from the sci-fi setting is that they were that they are 'vultures' picking after the dead and the scene involved a ship of some kind (again; one was obliterated space junk while the other still more or less one piece). If that's close enough to be considered copying or even directly inspired from one to the other, then many, many other shows/games/movies/books could be seen as copying from Starcraft (including ones from from before it was made).
yeah but they both had similar guitar riffs going whilst they floated around in space so that's enough to establish a connection i think. of course starcraft's intro was much cooler. and obviously you can't copy from something before it's made.

i don't think it would be good at all for sc2 to be inspired by firefly, which really failed as a genre piece. it was terrible science fiction and it was absolutely reprehensible as a western--there was too much dialogue and the characters wouldn't last thirty seconds in a real western. they were all too nice and talked too much. obviously sc isn't completely western but it has certain elements of such which firefly failed to demonstrate

the problem with sc2 is the developers watched too much firefly and not enough cool shit like aliens and full metal jacket

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but not the last part about SCII being inspired from Firefly. Maybe it's because I'm from Europe and Firefly never really got anyone's attention here, so I can't in any way see why or how SCII developers would be inspired by something that blatantly copied them.
Also SC is practically a beefed up version of Aliens, so I can't see how they would need to be even MORE inspired.

First of all, I'd like to point out that your comment of there being a guitar riff in the salvage scene in Firefly is wrong. The scene in question (which isn't even the show's opening) opens in complete silence and is largely devoid of any background music. Moreover, the atmosphere is considerably different. The salvagers in SC1's opening seemed relaxed and excited with their haul. Meanwhile, Firefly's crew were tensed and serious through out the scene.

My comment about copying off one another is that if you look enough, lots and lots of things are similar to one another. However, that's not to say one copied the other, or is even directly inspired from. Quite often, two similar things can be produced entirely independently of one another.

It's clear that you dislike Firefly and I'm fine with that. To each their own. However, to say that Firefly was a horrible piece on sci-fi or western and acting as though it has no redeeming values is clearly inaccurate. The fact that the show, despite having only one season after getting screwed over my their network, still has a strong fan community, in which the fans and cast members still think fondly of the show despite it being nearly ten years old shows that they definitely did something right.

hm well i remember there being a guitar playing through that entire scene but i've only watched the show once so if you've seen it more frequently i'll take you at your word <3

i didn't say it has no redeeming values. it had amusing dialogue and situations, and i respect that. it failed as science fiction, however, because joss whedon tried to shoehorn all these "western" elements (antiquated guns, cattle rustling) into a setting which also contained spaceships. and it definitely failed as a western because westerns are about strong men of few words, not pudgy Nathan Fillion saying three hundred words a minute.

allow me to say again, however, that i did enjoy firefly

The fact that most SC fans automatically think of the SC intro even if it doesn't have a guitar part or not, just proves how similar it is. And when you get that feeling, you automatically compare the two scenes, and to me the SC intro is much more intense and in the end better directed, written, and heck yeah, even better played, even though it's 100% CGI.

Firefly is great, not because of the series itself, but because it's a prototype of something that, had it been done a lot better, would still be a series today. And I'm talking quality here. I've already mentioned in earlier posts in this thread, why Firefly is a bad series.
Short said, it has potential, but the potential is ruined by the way the show has been made. (Directed, written, played, casted, etc.) It comes off as a copy of all the things which succeeded in these genres that it mixed, and therefore only leaves the feeling of a very good potential left...
