Thread: Mic Chat

    Default Mic Chat

So, I've been using third party programs for mic chat since the in-game one is pretty horrible. Currently using mumble, but i'm wondering if anyone knows whether there is a third party program, where I don't have to hold the key to use the mic. I'd much rather just press the button to turn on the mic and then press it again to turn it off.

In my opinion the new Teamspeak 3 is by far the best such application to use with gaming.

When i used to play EvE online my mates and i were using either teamspeak2 or ventrillo and it's the same when i'm online in combat flight sim servers. The only downside to this is that you need to rent or own a server. When it's a flight sim server or an MMO team that serves a few dozens (or hundreds) of people this is pretty normal, since they usually come with a website/forums, maybe some advertisement banners and a donation button to come up with the necessary fees.

However, in SC2 i haven't managed to get the in-game voice comms to work and since none of us has a ventrillo/TS server handy we tend to use skype. I don't think it creates significantly more network traffic than most voice comms software out there unless you start a conversation and invite a lot of people, in which case i suspect the host would use more bandwidth since he's essentially playing the role of a TS server.
Another thing is that it needs a bit more "ooomph" CPU-wise. This comes with an advantage, since the reason behind it is that it filters feedback. That is, i can talk on the mic and have the sound output to my speakers if i don't want to use headphones, but 95% of the time the other guy doesn't hear his own voice loop back at him thanks to the filtering algorithms. It's also completely free.

I haven't tried Teamspeak3 yet to be honest, i expect it might have some similar funcionality.

Does Teamspeak 3 allow for the feature i'm looking for? You just press the button once to turn on the mic and press again to turn off?

I always use Xfire. It's a great for having voice chats with other people, you can record videos and take screenshots ingame etc. It's just awesome.

And yes, you don't have to press a key to talk using xfire.

Most programs have this "feature". Leave it open mic with no push to talk. If you want to mic to turn off just hotkey it with your windows to turn it off.

With teamspeak3 they allow you to own a free server for up to 32 people so you don't need to pay if you are just gonna speak with a few friends. It also has the ability to voice activate or continuous transmission.
