Thread: Void Rays

    Default Void Rays

    I just got started playing the Beta today, but twice so far I've watched a pair of Void Rays shred my entire base single-handedly and kill any counter-attack I send at them in seconds. I sent Rines at them in one game, about a half dozen, all of them dead in seconds, sent a few Vikings at them in another, same story. So do I just have bad luck or are they really that tough? Any advice to counter them?

    6 marines vs 2 void rays?? lol how is that a counter... im assuming they are already charged up since they were in ur base, wat i dont get is how come u have so few marines and so less AA? wat are the rest of ur forces and how much forces does he have?

    He teched to them, it was ground vs ground and I didn't have AA yet. I took out his ground forces with Marauders, Marines and a few Tanks, but the Rays raped me.

    simple to beat. Do the "standard" imbalanced terran build right now, get 1 rax then 1 fact then 1 starport, and build whatever unit you need. If you see a void coming, 1 viking will beat 1 void (marines so they cant chase you down), and just keep their void ray numbers down (with a push because voidrays cost SOO much money that they cant have too many by the time your army is ready to beat them) so its easy to stop.

    I never win with just void rays vs decent terrans, I just use voids to keep them in their base another 1-2 minutes while I get units that actually do dmg.

    i see, so it was ground vs ground, wat you could do is then to a base race, in that case u should win or if he attacks ur ground forces with the voidrays u will have plenty of time to kill off some important buildings and then build counter forces in ur base.

    nice.

    I'm curious to know how well a Protoss base, rushed to vrs, can cope vs a baneling counter-attack.

    I go 13 Spawning pool, 15 Hatchery and then build 2 Queens at my main and 1 at my natural. Two Queens spawn Larva, the third spawns Creep Tumors to create a creep highway between main and natural. The third Queen finishs at ~5:30 and Lair tech at ~6:00. If you see a Void Ray you may want to even build a forth Queen at your natural. The first Hydras finish about the time the third Void Ray arrives at your base.
    After that most Protoss switch to a Gate build and start attacking you with a heavy ground force, without Spine Crawlers you may not be able to hold that push off.
    After you defend the ground push you can push out yourself, create a creep highway towards your opponents base and attack with your ground forces, Spine Crawlers and any additional Queens you may have build. Be cautious not to be cought in transition, Crawlers have a root time of 12 seconds now.
