Heh. That was my bad. Didn't think my post through. Let's rewrite my comment to read that outside of AoE III, Madden XX, and several music games I have not seen many in significant quantities. Many of those I have seen, wanted or not, only had maybe 2 or 3 in store and they were gone by the time I got the money together.

Hardly, there are always a ton at best buy and other electronics stores.

Reserved mine day 1. Also, Amazon UK still has it. And on regular Amazon people are already offering it for $299

I haven't pre-ordered. I'll find a way to get one, probably through the Blizzard store. They know how popular it will be, so it'd be foolish for them to not make plenty of them. My main hesitation is that I don't have a computer capable of playing SC2 and I'm not sure if I will by the time the game releases (but I'll try).

I pre-ordered mine but I don't think Blizzard would make so little. Perhaps a marketing tool for people to buy more?

I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't an excess of them. A lot of games have huge followings but with the economy the way it is retailers might not want to take the chance of buying a very expensive box set and then having to sit on it for long periods of time. Case in point the Halo 3 Legendary bundle. You can still find these in quite a few places (I've seen them in 3 different Best Buy stores in the Detroit Metro) for half the original price tag. Preferences and quality of pack ins aside it wouldn't be too out there for retailers to take a wait and see attitude based on the amount of pre sales they get of the collectors edition.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Note that I am speaking only of initial release special editions and those released shortly thereafter. Special releases such as Blizz's War Chests are not included. That said:

I suppose it is possible that different stores in different areas may stock differently according to space and demand restrictions. I am in Philadelphia, PA, US. The Gamestops here are actually better for collector's editions than the Best Buys. I got my AoE III collector's edition at a Gamestop. They typically stock up to 3 depending on the initial sales and the size of the package. They also consider the number of different such editions out at the same time.

I no longer seek collector's editions at any of my 3 local Best buys. I was looking at the AoE III collector's box and was told to put it down as the ENTIRE pile was reserved for preorders and that the stock for general sales would not be available for 4 to 6 weeks. I got mine at Gamestop an hour later.
