Thread: Suggestion: Replace thor with an Anti-Air Siege tank

Default Suggestion: Replace thor with an Anti-Air Siege tank

I was talking to a friend on AIM. His name is Tenebrae from the sc2gdf. He is one of the more knowledgeable people I've ever met in terms of starcraft lore.

He came up with the idea of having a quadruped anti-air tank, which would be the same kind of concept as the Siege tank, only this siege mode will open up anti-air defensive weapons.

The AA Siege tank could have a ground attack when in regular tank mode, thats much weaker than a regular tank of course, but a powerful AA attack. Allowing it to battle even capital ships(with a decent amount of them), but while in siege its immobile and defenseless against ground units of any type.

    What do you think?

Personally, I like this much better than a giant nerfed thor that can't even fight BCs, and has no real role. This also would give the terran's Anti-air defense earlier in the tech tree.

Or it coul'd just be an upgrade for the siegetank, and the tanks has 2 deploy modes. But really, i don't think that the terran need any more antiair units.

So what you are saying is the Thor should be turned into something other than Anti-air, or removed completely?

So your "big fix" for the Thor is to turn it into a harder-to-use Goliath that rapes everything and anything air?

Um, no. I like having useful air units that aren't countered by a single Terran ground unit that comes before them in the tech tree. Thanks.

Seems too similar to what the Thor already is. I know there's differences but we don't need to just make the Siege Tank a Goliath when it already is ultra powerful when defended well. I think that'd be impossible to balance without gimping it to the point that it's not good at anything.

Then what will the Terran be without a Siege Tank? That's the whole purpose of having a Terran ally and being Terran.

DS Can you at least hide those pictures.. Is that available on this forum? Because seriously, this forum isn't good for just throwing pictures out like you do on BF.

No, I think you guys are a little confused here.

The Terran Siege Tank is completely different than the Anti air Siege tank would be... A completely different unit, not an upgrade for the tank, and not a replacement for it.

Secondly, The thor is a huge piece of crap. It comes way too late in the tech tree, it has a weapon similar to the siege tanks ground attack, and its anti-air is sucky for how incredibly expensive the unit is supply wise and damage wise.

This unit would be a mobile air defense GTA unit, with a very poor ground attack to fend off maybe lings in small numbers. It's air defense would be weaker than a thors and STRONGER than the goliath, but its cost and tech tree position would be much better, and give the terran faster access to good AA. Think of a powerful AA attack with a slow reload rate, like the siege tank in siege mode. So in terms of damage in a period of time, it would be maybe slightly worse than a goliath, but that all depends on balance, and isn't the point.

As I've said before, I think it would be best to get rid of the Thor, move the Viking to the Factory (built in ground mode), and allow the Viking to shoot its anti-air missiles from the ground. Then, when a Starport is built with a Tech-Lab attached, there will be an optional upgrade to allow the Viking to transform from ground to air, at the cost of making its anti-air attack usable only from the air -- lore arguing that the transformation mechanisms required the change-up.

I originally suggested this as an alternative to the ST back when the Thor still had bombardment, so the idea isn't new.

Can't say I like the OP's idea. I don't want to have 2 units functioning almost the same IE: Both tanks having a siege mode. SC is known for its very distinct units.
