There seems to be sound overlap issue. The game will only play one sound if two are overlapping, which is likely intentional to prevent audio spam.

And to Wankey...damn dude. Proclaiming an entire game is crap just because you're disappointed with some sounds is a bit overacting...dontcha think? Personally I think the sound is great, with the exception of a few Zerg voices. The sound effects themselves are great.

And how can you expect the game's audio to be iconic? It's only been out for a few months. No doubt it'll become iconic after a few thousand games are played and you start hearing the sounds in your sleep.

Try looking at the game in a positive light for once, sheesh. It has tons of potential.

Yeah, i dissapointed with sound in general. I cannot understand why the lower quality after 12 years. It should be way better, not worse.

Are you playing the retail version of Starcraf2?

I hope for Blizzards sake that these are all just temporary sounds that they are working on. I agree that we should be informing them that their current sound is not good enough, but on the same token we should note this is not the final retail version of the game, and thus things may not be perfect yet.

Hell, they still have +- 80 days to work on this.
We have that in mind, fyi. That's why we are here in the first place talking about it.

The only thing I have a problem with as a downright problem problem is the Zerg announcer. They need to fix the voice effects on the actor's lines.

    This.

All I hear is noise in SC2, compared to clear and distinct sound in SC1.

The only problem I have with sound is the loud noise a breaking MULE makes. I keep thinking that I'm under attack.

Hmm, this is a double edged sword. I like it because it's distinct enough to tell me I need to be shooting down another mule from the orbiting mothership. But it's also very annoying if you're not paying attention because you think something just EXPLODED IN YOUR BASE.

What it should be is sound of falling parts and then a robotic powering down sound.

They need to make base sounds a lot more interesting. In SC1, each race that distinct base sounds. Terran had a very distinct drilling sound, Protoss has a very distinct and clear alien sound, and zerg had a very nasty and disgusting chewing sound. In Sc2, none of the bases have that. Protoss are the only ones that come close.

Sigh, the sound is a major disappointment, I really hope they see this and fix it ASAP. But the sad thing is I think it is near final. People saying that this is not retail don't have a clue what they are talking about. The game was scheduled to be released in 2009. Artwise, the game was complete. Balance wise, the game was ready for beta. CGI was probably fully finished or close. And sound, well sound must've been in the near finished area.

Just a big disappointment. I hope the last 80 days they are in overdrive area trying to fix sound to at least Warcraft 3 quality.

But no, SC2 sound is just utterly bad. Unit voice overs are lame, and zerg sound terrible but I have gotten over that. The problem is that the sounds in SC2 are all from the same sound effect! That's, THUD.

    Let me illustrate.
    SC2
    Zealot attack, swift swift sound.
Dark Templar attack, swift swift sound.
    Stalker, zap zap sound.
Phoenix, zap zap sound. (same effect)
Immortal, I don't even notice his sound when attack, it's so generic. Laser noise?

    SC1
Zealot attack, very noisy weird and original sound.
    Darktemplar attack, KWWIRRRCHCHHH, KWWWIRRCCHHHH
Dragoon, very original sound. Like a Fatoomp, and then the hit effect is very hard.
Scout, machine gun sound effect with a very unique air to air attack

Each unit had a very unique sound and very unique way to hear them.

In SC2, even the THUD of your research building sounds like an explosion because the sounds are SO generic. It's really beginning to piss me off. I'm beginning to tell my brain that the Boom after pressing X doesn't mean you're under attack.

I think the problem with SC2 is that they went for realistic sounds rather than original. Instead of the "pop pop pop" from siege tanks, they opted for what it would really sound like, which is an alright approach but the noises simply become a blur after a while.

Compare Hydralisk' original SPLAT noise to the current mpph mpph when they attack.

    Very annoying at times.
I didn't have a problem with the sound until I read your post and started to think about it.
