But no, SC2 sound is just utterly bad. Unit voice overs are lame, and zerg sound terrible but I have gotten over that. The problem is that the sounds in SC2 are all from the same sound effect! That's, THUD.
Let me illustrate.
SC2
Zealot attack, swift swift sound.
Dark Templar attack, swift swift sound.
Stalker, zap zap sound.
Phoenix, zap zap sound. (same effect)
Immortal, I don't even notice his sound when attack, it's so generic. Laser noise?
SC1
Zealot attack, very noisy weird and original sound.
Darktemplar attack, KWWIRRRCHCHHH, KWWWIRRCCHHHH
Dragoon, very original sound. Like a Fatoomp, and then the hit effect is very hard.
Scout, machine gun sound effect with a very unique air to air attack
Each unit had a very unique sound and very unique way to hear them.
In SC2, even the THUD of your research building sounds like an explosion because the sounds are SO generic. It's really beginning to piss me off. I'm beginning to tell my brain that the Boom after pressing X doesn't mean you're under attack.
I think the problem with SC2 is that they went for realistic sounds rather than original. Instead of the "pop pop pop" from siege tanks, they opted for what it would really sound like, which is an alright approach but the noises simply become a blur after a while.
Compare Hydralisk' original SPLAT noise to the current mpph mpph when they attack.
Very annoying at times.
