Thread: Okay, that's it. SC2 sound is crap, utterly crap.

Default Okay, that's it. SC2 sound is crap, utterly crap.

I've tried to get used to the sound, I tried to like it.

But no, SC2 sound is just utterly bad. Unit voice overs are lame, and zerg sound terrible but I have gotten over that. The problem is that the sounds in SC2 are all from the same sound effect! That's, THUD.

    Let me illustrate.
    SC2
    Zealot attack, swift swift sound.
Dark Templar attack, swift swift sound.
    Stalker, zap zap sound.
Phoenix, zap zap sound. (same effect)
Immortal, I don't even notice his sound when attack, it's so generic. Laser noise?

    SC1
Zealot attack, very noisy weird and original sound.
    Darktemplar attack, KWWIRRRCHCHHH, KWWWIRRCCHHHH
Dragoon, very original sound. Like a Fatoomp, and then the hit effect is very hard.
Scout, machine gun sound effect with a very unique air to air attack

Each unit had a very unique sound and very unique way to hear them.

In SC2, even the THUD of your research building sounds like an explosion because the sounds are SO generic. It's really beginning to piss me off. I'm beginning to tell my brain that the Boom after pressing X doesn't mean you're under attack.

I think the problem with SC2 is that they went for realistic sounds rather than original. Instead of the "pop pop pop" from siege tanks, they opted for what it would really sound like, which is an alright approach but the noises simply become a blur after a while.

Compare Hydralisk' original SPLAT noise to the current mpph mpph when they attack.

    Very annoying at times.

I don't have any problems with the sounds. Although, I don't know if that has to do with me having so much fun with the gameplay I don't notice it or that the sounds themselves are good enough for me.

It also might be that the Starcraft 1 sounds are very iconic and classic now while SC2 is very new and we aren't used to them yet.

Finally it comes down to individual tastes where different things sound good or bad to different people.

Yeah, the original SC1 sounds are iconic, the new ones are just crap. Dark templar especially, where is my CHACHANG! CHACHANG! and hearing dead zerg? Now it's swift swift, blurp. Feels very tacky. Oh well, I hope they are actively working on the sound or if they are not then... how sad that a great game, smeared by poor sound production.

I have to agree with you; it's like somehow they tried to be more technical and superior, and ended up with something not as great.

Virtually all of the sounds in SC1 sound better.

One of the biggest, yet seemingly less interesting (but something I want back) are the sounds the Probes, Drones and SCVs make when mining. It just seems like something you should hear when you're at your base, and it isn't there.

I agree, the sound has a mayor role in all the games, in SC2 will not be the exception. The current sounds is lame and shinyless compared to the graphics and effects, for example. Its not worth of a masterpiece like this game.
Heheheeey, I need some strong coffee.

Okay finally somebody brought this up. Soundwork is just not powerful enough. Your totally correct, I think they should have gone back to the slightly more unrealistic sounds which were more iconic. I'm hating the death sounds. In SC1 when you killed something, they would explode with a quick and powerful sound which was entertaining but now I dont see alot of it. >__>

I really wouldn't have cared if they ported a few unit voices directly over. Some of the lines from SC1 have great nostalgia behind them. For instance, why can't the Immortal say "I have returned," when they are produced from the Robo facility? It wouldn't be tacky to use the same lines from SC1.

My biggest sounds beef is the Ultralisk attack.

...seriously? That gigantic creature, with blades the size of a building, makes THAT SOUND when it attacks? it sounds more like a marine shaving.

The only hope is that someone can mod in some of the sounds from the first game. The sounds, the voice acting, the music: below average. I cannot believe this pathetic effort is Blizzard work.

My biggest disappointment came when I was playing my first game as protoss and needed to construct additional pylons and instead of the voice alert all I got was some little text telling me to build them.

Also my first game as zerg when I didn't have enough vespene gas and again all I got was a little text alert.

It was these little things that made SC1 so memorable.
