Thread: Do you exercise ?

I used to run the 400m dash at a really good level until I got injured right before a huge qualifier . After that year my schedule changed so I couldn't invest 3-4h+ hours a day into training anymore. Since I'm rather competitive and didn't want to do things half way, I just quit track altogether... That was about three years ago.
Nowadays to stay in shape I use mostly body weight exercises so I just do that at home.

Yes I exercise. Nothing like a good workout and the feeling of accomplishment you get afterward. I do weights, sometimes run, and have done so for the past 5 years. I can feel the lack of energy when I don't work out - which motivates me to stay active.

I've been working out for almost 5 years. Did cross-country in high school, and I was a steady 130 lb. (BTW, I'm 5'10") Two years after high school (and running), I went on a two week Hawaiian vacation with my family, came back and weighed in for the first time in a while, was 180 lb, and it freaked me out. I've been working out since. For a while I got down to 160, then I've kept on hitting 10 lb plateaus. I'm about 190 now. My intention was never to get huge, lean enough to own my friends in soccer, but big enough to lay some hurt in a friendly tackle (American) football game. I've still got some extra padding in the middle hiding the six pack, but like the saying goes: "The first place you get it is the last place you lose it." So lately I've been incorporating more running and swimming into my workout rather than mostly weight-lifting, to help me lean me up.

I really need to start working out - some of my friends started last year at school, and ended up getting pretty big. I've always been pretty lean though, I'm 20 years old, and only 130 pounds (5'8")

Where should I start? I've got nothing better to do while waiting for another dose of blizz BS...

Depends on if you've reached your full height. Most guys stop growing (up) around 20, although some guys do get taller a bit later than that. If you feel you're as tall as you're going to get, then go ahead and start now, before you make the mistake I did, waiting until your metabolism slows down and gets the better of you. If you work out, it'll keep your metabolism at its higher rate and you'll be less likely to develop a gut.

In starting, if you join a gym, I suggest straying away from personal trainers unless you're self-motivated. Use one or two sessions with a trainer to get familiar with the equipment and what parts of the body they work. The trainer can start you off with basic workout routines, and from there, change up your workout to fit what you want.

If you're not keen on the weights, running is good if your knees can take it. The elliptical doesn't work you nearly as much, and you need to spend at least 30 minutes to get some real benefit out of it. Swimming is also good for a lighter full-body workout, and if you push yourself enough, is good cardio too.

    Where do you start ?

    http://www.liamrosen.com/fitness.html

    Read that first.

Then, research Starting Strength. Google is your friend in that aspect. There, it's all you need for the next 5-8 months.
