Thread: Thor's Hammer

And experts said that with today's technology and strict regulations, off-shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico would be perfectly safe. Uh huh...well, we all know how that's working out.

Concerning CERN and the LHC, I'm not convinced that what these scientific "experts" profess is 100% truthful...or maybe a better word would factual. They are dealing with an area of physics and gravitational gobbledygook that we have only really been tinkering with for what, maybe a 100 years. And half of that was on paper. We didn't go actually fiddling with uranium and splitting atoms until the 1940's.

It's kind of like a gun in the hands of a five-year-old. The gun may or may not be empty, but as the only adult in the room, would you want to take the chance of letting him tinker with it. No!

Trouble is...there are no adults (technologically advanced alien space bats, Q, or [insert your preferred higher being here]) around to tell us little kiddies to stop messing with this stuff before we blow our metaphorical feet off.

Well i guess that these aliens hadnt had such help for themselves either....so they are already dead...so we will die too....and this is pretty much the end for all sentient species in the universe....they advance in tech...discover particle accelerators...make them more powerful and then get killed by it.....2012....mini black hole gone BAD

    Or worse...

    What's that sound?

Oh, that was a Big Bang. Everyone and everything in the Universe has just been vaporized. Have a nice day. Or not.

As far as I know, there's more dangerous stuff in the higher atmosphere to be afraid of than anything that goes on in that accelerator.
    Aaand sold.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Stuff in our atmosphere has been going on for 4.5 billion years, so that's enough time for us to know by now whether it forms a stable black hole, which it clearly doesn't. The problem is that stuff going on in the accelerator is newly forged ground, with the chance that there might be a calculation we overlooked and a stable black hole could form. But really, you could say that about anything, and it's clear there's no real chance of a stable black hole forming.

    Maverick...

There is a fine distinction between caution and paranoia.
From where you're standing, I believe that line is way over the horizon thataways.

I'd rather think of it as being humble, not outright paranoia. When you're dealing with the power of creation...even on a small scale like these Particle Accelerators, I think you have to remain humble, first and foremost.

I want to be wrong about these machines, believe me. I hope that they do help us in the long run. I think they are going to be our gateway to unlocking newer, better sources of energy, FTL technology, dark matter, the god particle and a host of other equally important discoveries. I just want these scientist to be careful. Very, very, very careful.

I've said my piece. Viva La LHC!!!

There's nothing science has done that hasn't already happened in the cosmos a number of times already. What the LHC tries to do happens in the upper atmosphere of our planet all the time, as an example. The LHC just tries to re-create that in a controlled enviroment where specific observations can be made.

Don't tell that to any diehard black-hole mongers. They get really pissed when someone brings real science into the equation.
