Except it doesn't. Clock rate matters more than cores and the clock rate of the X6's are considerably lower than Core i5's or Core 2 Duos.

That's cool of Blizz to make it more CPU intensive than Graphics Card intensive. High-end CPUs are way more common than high-end graphics cards, so it helps them keep the game accessible.

Aye, i7s will always perform better, but I think we might see some interesting numbers with the new X6s. They seem to be running pretty dang well in all benchmarks so far, including games.
But you are correct: on a budget there's no real reason to go higher than a 3 core Phenom II, which have some awesome deals. If you've got a bit more, I'd say spring for the X6s. If you have a LOT more, go for the i7s.
My next build is going to be a 1090T Black Edition (I just know I can hit 4.5ghz on my awesome AM3 cooler, I just know it) with the 890FX motherboards. The great thing about this release: you can get an Asus Crosshair IV motherboard AND a six-core processor for less than the price of several models of i7s.
Intel may have performance crown, but nothing can beat performance-per-dollar of the new 890FX chipsets and 6core Thuban cores. They are pure beautiful.
