A quote from that particular article: "Now we have to set things in perspective for several usage segments, let's start of with gaming. Game performance wise the stone cold truth is that Intel has the better overall package in peak performance, even Core i7 quad-core processors will continue to dominate AMD's six-core processors in the high-end gaming segment."
Note to people planning on upgrading: "high-end gaming" in this case does not include StarCraft 2. In fact, I found that statement rather odd. I've never had an Intel processor outperform my Phenom II 965BE when it comes to gaming; it was everything else the Intel's outperformed it with.
So now we have a six-core processor that can game AND do everything else, for less than $350 on the open market. Wow. That's awesome.

yup it is, those six-core CPU's are really for those who want great performance for lower price, great OC and stable system, that is one big step for AMD in terms of crushing Intel's dominance in the market
I approve, this and the last year are clearly AMD/ATI big success
6 mln 5xxx GPU's sold, those six-core CPU's
for a second I regret buying the i7-860 because of the lack of six cores for the 1156 socket as intel promised, but hell I have a great and stable system and the 5870, that will leave me for about 2 years without upgrading

look at the Gaming performance, that is sweet, you could buy a high end 890GX mobo, 4GB DDR3, the 6-core from AMD and the 5870, you wouldn't spend much and you would have very little less performance in games than the 999$ i7-980x
*
199 USD Phenom II X6 1055T
*
125 USD 890GX motherboard (integrated graphics)
*
60 USD 4 GB DDR3 1333 (I would recommend something like the Corsair XSM3 DDR3)
*
50 USD 500 Watt PSU (I would recommend 89$)
*
50 USD Chassis (I would recommend 100$)
*
69 USD 1 TB HDD
*
25 USD ODD
and the 5870 for 400$
something near 1100$ for a great RIG, while the i7-980x costs 1000$

None of that has anything to with a dual core optimized game such as StarCraft 2. It doesn't matter how many cores you throw at it, it'll only use two. What matters is clock rate.
We've been through this before spychi.
i5 750's overclock to 4.0Ghz on air I've heard. And, a 2.66Ghz i5 750 typically performs on par or better than a 3.4Ghz Phenom II 965 according to benchmarks.
And, the i5 661 are already 3.46Ghz out of the box.

yes but with what cost? heat and much higher TDP
the i5 at 4GHz ~60C
Thuban at 4GHz ~45C
which means that with the six core CPU you can get higher clock frequency and stable system, I can bet my money that with a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler I could achive 4.3GHz or even bit more and with water cooling I could achive from 4.7GHz to 5GHz with ease
I can't wait for nitrogen tests
but the i3 are dual core's so it's a bit meh for those who want high end gaming, plus look at the BF BC2 tests, where is the i3 and where is the Thuban
I will defend AMD here, this clearly is a remarkable achivement for them, such low TDP/heat/price is a small revolution for gamers
about StarCraft 2 Beta performance, well we need to wait for the final product as 50 FPS for high end RIGs is not much for such graphics quality

Good point. I haven't researched the X6 yet. Besides, if given the choice between equal AMD and Intel CPUs, I always go for AMD. They are much more caring to the consumer. They must be supported.
How come you know this but don't know about core threading?

???
I'm confused. I said a six core won't perform in better in StarCraft 2. To which you said, yes it will. Am I missing something?

I almost feel bad for having an Intel i7 940 now.
Well, next computer I buy I'll have to give AMD/ATI a serious look. Thanks for posting this article!
