    Default Zerg Roach Build Transition

I'm a big fan of roaches after a 13 pool and I haven't figured out what to transition to after opponent starts to counter with marauders. I just played a game transitioning to mutas then hydras, but to me that seems too spread out. Maybe upgrades are the answer?

Another question is when is a good time to hive tech?

Awesome post on the Strategy fourms... -..-

You can try speedlings! thats what I usally go for...and hydras are good too.

Tbh I usually just get a few roaches to stop certain builds then swap to speeding and save my gas for my lair tech

That would be extremely difficult one a small map even with good macro but it makes sense. I've also been experimenting with speedlings using my extra mins with roachs, which works alright but again doesn't really work vs marine/marauder or immortal/sentry/zealot.

yeah i rarely get more than 3-4 early roaches vs terran. if they are very heavy on helions /tanks later, it makes sense to throw in more, but for the most part, its ling/bling/hydra/infestor vs terran. there's no scuh thing as "too spread out"

Ill try that mix but on small levels aside from lings its hard to keep map control while teching to tier 2 if terran goes reapers or mauraders early on.

I'd just like to point out that going for Ultralisks in any matchup is a bad idea .

If you try to rush to them, you'll be vulnerable for way too long.

And even when you do get Ultralisks, Terrans have Marauders in abundance, which makes Ultras next to useless.

As for Protoss, even though they may not have any Immortals if you somehow surprise them with Ultralisks, it only takes a couple of Immortals (as opposed to having an equal number of Immortals vs your Ultralisks) to make your Ultras much less effective.

If you're going to get anything at Hive tech, it's gotta be Brood Lords .

Burrow-move works well if you rush right. Otherwise, if you want to mass Roach, Organic Carapace and attack upgrades seem to work well.

Your defiantly right i was playing a protoss turtle on scrap station tried nydus worm with roaches he had that covered, tried to switch to ultras but lost map control... brood lords it is then.

i rarely get an opportunity to use them, but ultras do have some viability, maybe even in every matchup; zergs infestors with NP is probably their strongest counter.

their AoE damge is huge & large enough to probably even mae them wortwhile vs Marauders, so long as you limit their kiting with zergling flanking and / or infestor-Fungal growth.

with Thors more susceptible to NP now, Ultras have more of a fighting chance, Broodlords are ofcourse still teh mroe straightforward tech choice, but sicne patch 10, they are about as hard or even harder to coutner than BL's ; Vikings can be pumped out faster, and used easier with long range + aereal flanking, than Thor/Marauder(/Tank) that in turn have to deal mroe directly with other zerg ground units than Vikings do

... Post Tier3 ZvT's are still rare, but i get a feeling many palers are still underestimating Ultralisks.
