Yeah that could be a reference, but why would one exclude the chair conformations when looking for carbon-cycle stabilityThey could have made pylon matrices chair shaped! We do see lots of aromatic cycles in organic compounds though.
There are a bunch of other examples though, like snow flakes or some ophiolites.
My guess is that they just needed a polygone to optimize spaceSquares are lame, and you can't make a tile without gaps with pentagones or octagones...
Btw, I can't remember where the hexagones are in halo. All I can think of are the Jackal's shields.

They use Hexagons cause Hexagons look awesome! Lots of them in Mass Effect, as well.

The triangle is the stongest polygon
The hexagon is the most area cost effective polygon (It has the same perimeter as a triangle and double the area)
But I'll take that the hexagons look awesome ^^
And you know what's cooler than ants? Colony spiders XD
