I've been playing as Zerg a lot, and I see a lot of players struggle in this matchup. The difference between me winning and losing seems to hinge upon my opponent understanding one simple concept. I believe that this is one of the major factors behind why so many players (Protoss in particular) have trouble playing against Zerg players.
You cannot beat the Zerg with macro alone. They build more units, can expand more easily, and have good map control with overlords and creep tumors. The macro game is their biggest advantage, and you can't let yourself play into it.
For instance I often find that my opponent is terrified of coming out of their base after being 10 pool rushed. They decide it's best to tech up and mass a few units before venturing out. By the time they are done teching the Zerg already has too many units to handle. Other times I see players recklessly expand across the map as fast as possible. The Zerg player is able to quickly see these movements and take them out. You spend all of your minerals on expansions, and again find yourself against a mass of Zerg units you simply cannot defeat. The problem is even visible when the expansion story seems to be equal on both sides. Players seem to believe that they just have to have enough unit producing buildings and they can mass a large army that will win. Others think that it's just about having the right unit mix. What they fail to realize is how easy it is for the Zerg player to match you. They can summon an entire army of units with a few clicks, and it requires almost no effort on their part in order to do so.
So how do you win? It's true that you have to get some sort of unit advantage on them somehow. The key is realizing that you have to create that opportunity. In every instance assume that they can click just as fast as you can. In this matchup you can't just outproduce your way to victory. You have to engage your opponent in the right places in order to create that advantage. In other words, you have to play with a strategic mind. You must do everything in your power to make sure the fight happens where you want it. Always place your units in the place that has the best chance to give yourself an economic or unit number advantage.
If you pressure the Zerg in this way they can never take advantage of their superior macro. Use your race's unique abilities to create the opening. In this way it's not so much creating a macro advantage for yourself as it is creating a disadvantage for your opponent. The Zerg player will be forced into situations where it has to waste units and send them to the slaughterhouse. You'll have stronger units, and a wider array of tactics at your disposal. Things will just start to snowball. At this point their macro advantage is completely nullified and it's easy to take on their forces. They're never able to create a large enough force, and their units just splash against yours.
