In all of the replays I have watched... one thing that has struck me is how EMPTY the zerg bases look. Does anyone else feel this? Why is this?
There is a hatchery.. maybe a few unit buildings clumped together behind minerals... and then thats it.

It has always been like that since sc1.

Yep and that's because you don't need a ton of buildings for it to work, few points here:
Zerg buildings can only be built upon creep and the more clumped your tech buildings are the better you can protect them.
Supply is provided by units (overlords) rather than buildings.
Zerg just have one production building (hatchery) and no matter how many units you want to produce you will almost never have more than three hatcheries in just one base, opposed to protoss and terran which are likely to have 4+ buildings of the same type.
Also the fact that the main buildings spred the creep makes it look like there's a lot of empty space, you're not going to place a building in every single space of creep yoou have.

Still, the OP does raise a good point. Why can't they come up with more buildings to place on the creep? Perhaps defensive buildings, or or buildings that bring some unique functionality to the race.

Well... Actually I prefer it the way it's now, lore-wise it makes perfect sense, the zerg base (aka the hive cluster) is supposed to be a whole living organism, living organisms don't have surplus organs and tend to occupy as less space as possible for them.
But yeah it might be interesting to see something applied here, any specific ideas Blazur?

Like other folks said - Zerg just don't need to produce a lot of buildings :P. Two hatcheries with Queens can produce respectable numbers of troops, and our supply depots / pylons are not buildings :P.
On the other hand, one thing which looks very 'Zergy' in SC2 is how so much of Zerg-controlled territory has creep, especially with Overlords creating creep bridges between bases. Feels like a proper Zerg infestation of the land :].

People are already complaining that the game looks too cluttered, this it will only make it worse.

I don't see how it'll affect it... =S
I suppose it'll draw your attention when looking at it or something.
EDIT: I totally got confused and thought this was about zerg buildings bleeding... >_>;;
Anyway... er... my point stands anyway. I don't see how adding more buildings would make the game seem 'cluttered'. But then I also don't think Zerg need anymore buildings. Now that spore and spine crawlers are actually useful we may see more of those. Particularly for banshees.

There is no need for zerg to have more buildings. The only difference in Sc2 is that they don't need tons of hatcheries, so it's exaggerated a bit from where it used to be.

I feel that zerg bases look fine.
