I won my first zerg game with a six-pack of them. Against thors. And lots of missile turrets. (Broodlings kill missile turrets dead. Heh.) I made only a few units after I demolished my opponent's first base, and they were all zerglings (mainly for scouting).

lol broodlords are only good vs terran being able to destroy marines with horrible pathing. Marines just shoot broodlings. Stalkers on the other hand engage and then blink over broodlings.

It's great when a Terran with siege tanks is being attacked by BL's.
The moment the broodlings touch the ground the siege tanks smash 'em and everything around to pieces, just seen this replay where about 40 marines where killed by their own siege tanks while engaging brood lords, that was hilarious.

Yeah I found out the hard way they are excellent against the Terran but not so much against Protoss, is it just me or are Stalkers a good counter ALOT of shit.

Yeah, that's why Marine+Tank wasn't used in BW. Now Tanks one-shoot Marines. That's the problem with Tanks, they're double-edged swords.
In Assault mode they could work, if they're so good in that mode as it's said sometimes.
But then, why not get Marauders instead of Tanks in Assault mode? There's some overlap there. Both are Armored, anti-armored, and ground-only units.

Broodlords are kind of an investment, I find myself bringing them out only when I feel the need to get some corruptors to help if I'm light on hydras or mutas. If the game lasts long enough to hit greater spire, then I'll morph at least three, as usually someone's turtling at that point, otherwise mutas and whatever ground counterpart should suffice. (That or long games they're nice to hit up undefended/poorly defended expansions.
Really the reason they're rarely seen is the sheer length of time it takes to hit them compounded by the resources that may be better spent on just more zerglings or something.
